10 - Downtown Improvements Update Pearl Street Mall: Family Gathering Place Renovation to begin March 14 Renovation of the Family Gathering Place, located in the 1200 black of the Pearl Street pedestrian mall, will begin Monday, March 14. The Family Gathering Place is a popular stop for families while visiting the Mall and is known for its large climbing rocks. After 34 years of service, the area is being improved this spring to remove deteriorating wood timbers and improve the safety of this family attraction. An engineered plan for the area calls for increasing the depth of the gravel safety surface, adding brick around the tree planter on the eastside, and replacing wood timbers with new, untreated, Ipe hardwood timbers. The existing bridge which was replaced recently will remain. The renovation process is expected to take approximately 6-10 weeks (depending upon weather) and has a budget of $100,000 (from the Parks and Recreation Department's Capital Improvement Project fund). The area will be secured with safety fencing throughout construction. Additional safety measures will be employed as needed when construction equipment, such as a crane, is used to raise some of the large stones slightly to accommodate for the increased height of the gravel safety surfacing. Every effort will be made to minimize the impact to area businesses and visitors, though some dust and noise are inevitable with a project of this nature. All area merchants can remain open and have been notified of this project, including Downtown Boulder Inc., Downtown Management Commission and other key stakeholders in the Pearl Street business district. If you have any questions about this project, please contact Lisa Martin, Urban Park Operations Manager at 303-441-3407. ~ lr Y~ . t One piece bollards made of ipe wood to match the decking and maintain the original design The gathering space is surrounded by new ipe decking, bollards and a new raised brick planter ~ ~r rr~• • - it l v -"-T r+Y' +ti. y V. qA M ?r ' /rva rT 1 - r L%r t ytr 11f t' } ji - ' tel. r••'.r. a All Existing space shown with worn timbers and leaning bollards Worn timber planter 7r R n The 6011 rds are sal dimensions as the original and placed close to the same locations pea gravel r is used -rornd the boulders } ~ j lh' 7v L h) 1 Jai, ' I r Apo Mpg - !14 ~I Worn upright bollards and numerous steps creating safety problems Rotten timbers steps An 8' step down from the ice decking allows safe access and provides an edge for crawling and running C I G N T h le F a m i I y G a t ti e r i n g S p a c e running children Ipe wood is used on the raised planter adjacent to the play area for safety and a R l1 D E L J G1 .17J Il unified look landscape architecture planning * s7ati2aera "dQ$1g" on the pearl street mall NOTE: SINCE THE ELEVATION OF THE EXISTING PLAY AREA 15 BEING RAISED 6', SOME OF THE BOULDERS ALSO NEED TO BE RAISED 8 RAISE BOULDER 8" HIGHER.
