SUBJECT: Guidelines for the Review of Artwork in Historic Districts and for Landmark
Structures
The Landmarks Board considered the guidelines below and adopted them as
administrative regulations of the Board on December 3.
Artwork includes, without limitation, paintings and sculptures. Whether attached to a
building or freestanding.
1) the artwork should be subordinate to the overall building.
2) The artwork should not obscure building elements or details. For instance, a
mural should not cover windows.
3) The artwork should not physically damage the building or site, such as paint on
unpainted masonry.
4) The artwork should be compatible with the historic character of the building
and/or district in that it does not confuse the public regarding the period of
significance of the buildings or district such as a mural of a New Orleans street
scene on a Victorian building.
