Dear Members of the Open Space Board of Trustees and the Boulder City Council;
I’m Margaret LeCompte, from Save South Boulder, speaking against disposal of
Open Space Land. Here are some facts about South Boulder flooding: The
flash flood that inundated Frasier Meadows in 2013 came from a bank collapse
near Dowdy Draw, not SBC. SBC also wasn’t the sole cause of the 2013
flooding. Nonetheless, OSBT is being asked to allow destruction of highly
protected, sensitive wetland habitat to build an ineffective multimillion dollar
dam and spillway for SBC that will
· Not protect against another 2013 style flood
· Be inadequate against future, larger floods
· Fail to control the other streams that did, in fact, cause the 2013
flooding, therefore
· Worsen future downstream flooding
All the while
· Risking destruction of highly protected wetlands in the State Natural
Area , Open Space, and the threatened species that rely on them.
OSBT should reject this disposal!!
The SBC project’s design is not evidence based, is still incomplete; and has
obtained none of the permits required for its construction—even from CDOT.
Since the 1990s it has been dictated by CU’s real estate interests and its desire
for an un-needed third campus in the SBC floodplain. It has never prioritized
human lives, property, and public safety –or the environment--in South
Boulder.
Utilities says its plan is the “best they can do” and the “only way to protect
Boulder citizens.” But these demonstrably false statements are just fear tactics
to disguise the real agendas, costs, risks and consequences of the project—to
humans and the environment.
OSBT should stick to the Open Space charter’s charge to protect, preserve, and
enhance Open Space lands. Please: Do not recommend disposal of any open
space lands for this dam.
