Dear Board of Trustees,
First off, thanks for creating and protecting open space in Boulder. It's literally why we, and
so many others, live here despite the high cost of living that is difficult on us and many other
working class folks (I can't attend the meeting midday today because of work). This is really
what makes Boulder special.
We can't lose that. If we do, we lose Boulder. It will turn into just another suburb.
Please reject the City of Boulder's request to dispose of and remove open space protection
from the S Boulder Creek floodplain.
The dam plan will reduce natural floodplain protections from the wetlands, endangering
habitat for rare plants and animals. It hurts the city to benefit only a few - and questionably at
that, as wetlands are adaptable natural infrastructure that scales, whereas a dam is built at
whatever capacity it's built at, and climate change is coming to make those scales obsolete. It
is a short sighted plan that is really just rolling over for CU, who need the housing and space
to increase tuition dollars.
It'll be a hard decision, but it's the right one. Open Space has made Boulder what it is - top of
the list in most desirable places to live. That's you all, and you should be proud of it. Keep
making those hard prioritizations and following the right decisions. We're behind you.
Best,
Brian Buma
