RE_ Manhattan Middle School tennis courts 5_RedactedFrom:Bulger, Connor To:Rhodes, Alison Subject:RE: Manhattan Middle School tennis courts Date:Monday, June 10, 2024 2:52:59 PM To my knowledge, that’s correct. I’ve never booked these for anything (they aren’t even listed in Active) and are not listed on our external website as reservable either. Hi Ali, I am a S. Boulder resident and active tennis player with the Boulder Tennis Assn and also was at the many PnR meetings regarding getting the inventory of tennis courts back to the pre-pickleball days. My husband and I prefer not to have to drive or join an unaffordable country club to play tennis. In that light, I have an inexpensive suggestion that could bridge over the dismal court availability at this time. As you know, we have lost Fairview and Centennial tennis courts due to resurfacing right now, and CU South too. This is a critical time of year for league and training for tournaments. Backstory: Sunday morning 6/9/24, all courts at Martin Pk, East Boulder Rec and S. Boulder Rec were full, so I finally settled on going over to the "horrible" courts at Manhattan Middle School. (Pls see photos attached) The 4 courts there are pretty bad, but one or two not so bad for informal practice or training with a ball machine. They could be made playable with the following cheap fixes: 1. Swap the net on court #1 to court #2, or replace the net on court #1. I didn't look closely at courts 3 and 4, but possibly the same scenario there. If there is no budget for a net, I can see if I could get a second hand one from RMTC and donate it to the city or school. The objective is to put the better nets on the least cracked courts. 2. Fill cracks with builder's sand, some cracks are 6" wide and hazardous. Coarse builder's sand has rough edges and would tend to stay packed in the cracks. This could tie us over until Fairview is done. 3. Consider Manhattan to be completely resurfaced in the near future and used as overflow courts for EBRC. It's easy for folks who get bumped off the EBRC courts to walk or bike over to Manhattan to continue to play tennis. It's a win - win to invest in 4 courts together for league and when Gonzo is doing his tennis classes, you have courts nearby. Thank you for keeping tennis accessible to all in Boulder.
