Hello Clare,
As we’ve begun making acquaintances on 13th Street, our neighbors have been sharing information about our home and their relationship with Peggy Archibald and Sue Mullins. Some of what
we’ve learned might be helpful to the discussion with the Landmarks Board as it pertains to specifics of the front masonry screen wall, background on Sue Mullins and the design of the House.
We all can see from the black and white photo you shared that the existing masonry screen wall is not what was originally designed. I’ve attached the photo and also an image from the plans below.
To further confirm that, Peggy Archibald had a conversation with Roselle Mullins George, Sue Mullins daughter, and they both agreed that the front wall was added to not just once, but twice.
Peggy shared that they raised the wall twice because “it felt like we were in a fishbowl when we sat at the dining table.” The Archibald's seemed to have been very private people and directed Sue
Mullins to significantly limit and screen the windows facing the street.
She also confirmed in her discussion with Roselle that Sue Mullins was definitely not an Architect. She was married at 18 and began raising a family shortly thereafter. It seems she may later have
taken some courses at the University of Colorado but did not complete an Architectural, Environmental Design or any other professional degree. When searching the State Architect archive of
Licensed Architects going back to the 1950’s, we have determined there is no Sue Mullins listed. I’ve attached this document for your information.
In addition, we have learned directly from Peggy Archibald that the home was “build-to-suit”. The design was largely driven by the Archibald’s themselves, not by Sue Mullins.
We believe this clarifying information further supports that this is not a significant home and thus should not be restricted by the Landmarks Board. We appreciate the energy you have invested to
help us make these minor modifications.
Thank you!
Jenifer Kennedy
