These words are found in Boulder’s historic district design guidelines to help define acceptable paint colors. The words may seem clear, but without physical examples to support them they can be interpreted in many ways. And often these interpretations may not be historically sympathetic to the structure or the district in which it resides. Unfortunately, except for the Floral Park and Chautauqua districts, there are no pictures or color samples ( aka ‘color palettes’) - only words. This situation tends to force color choices to rely solely on interpretation and personal taste. Which can lead to inconsistency, not only within districts but within neighborhoods and individual streets, as one person’s ‘conservative’ tone may be another’s ‘garish’ tone. 4 Color & Paint (2) Understanding which colors were actually ‘historic’ can be difficult without a color palette. This absence of district-specific palettes can be traced at least partially to a lack of documentation as there are few color photographs of structures within the districts. This is the direct consequence of color photography being either non- existent or in its infancy during much of the ‘period of significance’ for most districts. Consequently there are few records of the colors that were used. Although direct documentation is sparse, there is however some understanding of the dyes and pigments that were available, which at least provides us with a small basis to make color estimations. We also gain some additional knowledge through local anecdotal history, such as the use of ‘red’ and ‘white’ being considered ‘farm’ colors and therefore not likely to be selected for the main body of the house. And little relief can be found in current paint manufacturer’s ‘historic’ lines as they are too generic to faithfully reflect Boulder’s unique past. All of these conditions make any quest to repaint a home in an historically accurate color scheme likely to be very difficult unless an architectural historian who specializes in color is hired to take core samples directly from your building. 5 Color & Paint (3) This document attempts to address some of the difficulty in choosing a paint scheme when an official color palette is absent. It will do this through the use of ‘color science’ language to analyze and explain colors from current color photographs of buildings found in Boulder’s historic districts and other areas both in and outside of Boulder county. Each building’s body (field) and trim components are graded in terms of ‘Value’ (amount of black or white added to the hue), ‘Intensity’ (strength of the hue) and Context (the overall effect of the color palette on the architectural details of the building and it’s compatibility with neighboring structures). In addition there is an ‘Overall’ rating applied to indicate the color scheme’s general suitability. Hopefully the document will provide more clarity and understanding for the selection and application of paint color and in so doing will help to keep Boulder’s historic districts ‘historic’ - at least until definitive color palettes can be created. 6 TERMINOLOGY THE LANGUAGE OF COLOR SCIENCE 7 Color is generally discussed and understood through the following properties.   Hue: Understanding hue requires a brief discussion of color theory. With visible light, individual colors are components of white light that, when divided into a spectrum or rainbow, will run from red through all colors to violet. Colored objects and materials appear to have a specific color because they only reflect some of this spectrum and absorb the rest. The material in paint that does this is termed the ‘pigment' . To systematize and control making paint and inks, three colors; red, yellow and blue, are termed ‘primaries’, because other secondary colors, like orange, green and purple can be created by mixing them. Mixing all of them should yield black, if pigments are strong enough. There is a similar phenomena with light, such as theatrical spotlights, in which red, green and blue are the primaries. Crossing any two will create a secondary color of light such as yellow, cyan or magenta, and mixing all three creates white light. Although seeing color is a phenomena of light, what is important here to us is the color of the paint itself. Creating a true  primary color with paint requires very high-purity pigments and is therefore difficult to do. High- purity hues are thus rarely seen in large areas of paint and can look out of place or ‘garish’ in the context of a neighborhood. Consequently painting buildings in strong primary or secondary hues is generally discouraged in most areas.  8 The language Of Color Science (1) Value: The amount of black or white added to a base color. If black=0 and white=10 then 5 means equal amounts of both. Intensity:  The brightness or saturation of a given hue, also termed its purity    Factors of 'value' and 'intensity' are components of contrast. Very high contrast colors such as white and black can also lead to a ‘bright’, ‘garish’ or even ‘cartoon-ish' appearance and are generally discouraged. The properties of HUE, VALUE, INTENSITY and CONTRAST apply to the discussion of an individual color, but the colors applied to buildings tend to be used in 'ensembles', thus other concepts come into play such as those on the following slide:   9 The language Of Color Science (2)   Context:  The juxtaposition of a color to other colors on a building as well as the overall juxtaposition of a building to its surroundings. The perception of a given color changes within the context of other colors. Some colors are so incompatible that when they are adjacent they will appear to vibrate.   Delineation: The use of color or color properties to highlight architectural details. Delineation is generally a highly desirable quality in a historic building.  Any color that is used monochromatically, without any variation that respects changes in architecture components, will look flat and un-detailed. Thus monochrome treatment of historic structures is not desirable and is discouraged..   Field and Trim/Ensembles: Discussion of delineation requires discussing color at minimum in terms of a 'Field' color (principle color of the building) and 'Trim' color(s) which are considered secondary portions (e.g. frames, doors, cornices and other linear or small area components). When considering the field colors of a building unpainted materials such as brick and stone need to be considered as part of the color scheme.   10 The language Of Color Science (3) HUE 11 Red    12 Red is the first of the visible hues - and tends to be an attention-grabbing color. Where it occurs in nature it has connotations of warning or marking something as significant. In human use it is frequently similarly applied. As paint, red pigments have a particular quality of needing to be at high purity to remain red. Mixing with white to try to lighten it yields pink which is seen as a distinct hue, and adding other pigments will quickly pull it to another color. Because of this quality it is not frequently used as a primary paint color other than for agricultural, utility or other non-residential types of buildings. Naturally red colored materials such as brick are, however, used fairly often. 13 Palette Category: RED (White) Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: RED (Gray/Green) Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 14 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: RED/WHITE Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 15 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: Red(brick)/Green Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 16 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: Red(brick)/Green/Blue/White Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 17 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: Red(brick)/Brown/Cream/Green Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 18 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: Red(brick)/Brown/Cream Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Orange    19 Orange - which directly follows red on the spectrum, shares some of red's qualities but it can sustain lightening and still appear as an orange. Adjacent to bright red its edges can appear to vibrate or be hard to focus on. Some of these effects can persist even as it is lightened or darkened to grays. Certain tones of blue are similar to sky and ocean and may to desirable in some areas because of this quality. Blue-grays will have a cool or almost metallic quality but they can be used to good effect if carefully considered. 35 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: BLUE Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 36 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: BLUE Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 37 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: BLUE/GRAY/White Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Violet    38 Violet - and purple - is at the upper limit of visible light and at high purity can appear energetic or electric. They also serve as base pigments in many different colors of paint. White/Black/Gray    43 WHITE appears white because its pigment reflects all visible colors making it the brightest of tints. In strong sunlight it can be very intense and almost blinding. For this reason paint manufacturers make mostly whites that are diminished by a degree, mixed with small amounts of other colors. Regardless, even these off-whites will still reflect most all of colored light and will appear as intensely bright. Just as the brightness makes whites useful for delineation and detailing, it also makes it less desirable as a field color and as such it was rarely used in historic-period residential structures except in agricultural applications, thus its use is discouraged in our historic districts. 44 Palette Category: WHITE Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Palette Category: WHITE/Black Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 45 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: White/Black Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: White/Black/Gray    46 At the opposite end of the spectrum, BLACK is equivalently as intense as white, except that it reflects virtually no visible light and rather than appearing bright it can create an appearance of a void or a dark featureless object. In some instances black is useful as a delineation color but against a field of white or other color of most any brightness it will create an effect of excessive contrast, which is not particularly desirable in historic districts where such conditions rarely occurred. Black as a field color rarely ever has been used in residential settings and is strongly discouraged in our historic districts and on the architecture characteristically found in most of them? 47 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: Black(very dark gray)/Brown Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 48 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: White/Black Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: White/Black/Gray    49 Mixing black and white yields a middle or true GRAY. This gray will appear flat projecting neither warmth nor coolness. Gray is frequently mixed with other colors and even though remaining mostly gray, the resulting color will gain some characteristics of the other colors. Grays mixed with color on the red-side of the spectrum will appear to be warm, and on the blue-violet side will appear cool. This factor should be considered when pairing grays with other more pure colors in an ensemble, or with other grays of differing brightness. Large areas of gray can almost have emotive effects in many conditions of light and thus use of grays should be carefully considered in area, in ensemble and in context. 50 Palette Category: GRAY (white) Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Palette Category: GRAY (violet) Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 51 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: Gray/Blue/Yellow Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 52 Palette Category: GRAY(white) Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Palette Category: GRAY(very dark) Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Browns    53 This family of hues are secondary colors created by mixing red and yellow (orange) with various cool-side spectral colors like blue, green and violet. Browns can be mixed in a range from those appearing warm to those that appear cool. On buildings they are rarely used when mixed to higher purity for anything except details and trim. More often they are used when mixed towards gray values for field sized areas. Because of their multi-primary components they harmonize well with multiple color families and they can be useful to visually transition between colors that otherwise would not work together well. 54 Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: Brown/White Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: 55 Palette Category: BROWN Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (EM/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Context: APPROPRIATE/MARGINAL/INAPPROPRIATE Overall: ENCOURAGED/MARGINAL/DISCOURAGED Commentary: Res lops liqitos lorem… Palette Category: BROWN/Green Field: Hue: Value:(1-10) Intensity: (H/M/L) Rating: (E/M/D) Trim1: Hue: Value: Intensity: Rating: Trim2: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim3: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: Trim4: Hue: Value : Intensity: Rating: COLOR ENSEMBLES 56 Colors within Ensembles    57 Color needs to be discussed as an ensemble as that is the way it is generally seen.
