Harbeck-Bergheim House – Joint Study Session and Letter
On Feb. 21, 2019, the Landmarks Board and Parks and Recreation Advisory board (PRAB) held
a joint study session to discuss options for the future of the Harbeck-Bergheim House. A link
to the memo can be found on the project website (link above).
Following the Study Session, the Landmarks Board wrote a letter to PRAB. It is attached to this
Update Memo.
The Landmarks Board members and those interested in the project are encouraged to
attend the public hearing at City Council on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 in City Council
Chambers, 1777 Broadway. The meeting starts at 6 p.m.
National Register Nomination – Hannah Barker House
The Hannah Barker House (designated as a local landmark in 2007) has been nominated for
listing in the National Register of Historic Places. As a Certified Local Government, the
Landmarks Board is invited to comment on the nomination before the State Review Board
Meeting on May 24.
Historic Preservation Plan Five-Year Update
The Landmarks Board will review the final revisions to the Historic Preservation Plan at the
April 3 meeting. Visit the project webpage for project materials and updates.
Sustainability & Resilience Strategy for Chautauqua
A Request for Proposals has been issued for the development of a Sustainability & Resilience

Alpine-Balsam Area Plan
Historic Preservation staff are engaged in the Alpine-Balsam Area Plan. Visit the project

Atrium Building
Historic Boulder has agreed to continue keeping the March 2015 application to landmark the
Atrium on hold as exploration of these options continues. Update at meeting.

SUBJECT: Hannah Barker House, National Register of Historic Places Nomination
PURPOSE:
As a Certified Local Government, the Landmarks Board is requested to review and comment on the
attached draft National Register Nomination for th e Hannah Barker House located at 800 Pearl Street in
Boulder. The nomination is scheduled for review by the Colorado Historic Preservation Review Board
meeting on May 17th, 2019.
BACKGROUND:
The house at 800 Arapahoe Ave. was constructed in phases, spanning from the 1870s until 1901. The
original building on the lot, constructed by Caleb and Carrie Stowell, was a small, gable -roof brick house,
dating to the early 1870s. The Stowell’s added a one-story masonry addition to the west soon after the
construction of the gable portion, and a few years later added wooden lean -tos to the west and south of the
house. In 1875, they constructed a two-story, Italianate building to the north. In 1877, the lot was purchased
by Ezra K. and Hannah C. Barker and in 1900 Hannah Barker embarked on a significant remodeling project
on the house which added additional rooms on the front and west side of the house, as well as the full -
width porch at the front of the house.
Until 2008, the property encompassed approximately 20,000 sq. ft. when it was subdivided into two lots.
The 7,632 sq. ft. lot that included the house was designated as an individual landmark (the Hannah Barker
House), by the Boulder City Council on March 17, 2009. Historic Boulder, Inc., purchased the property.
With the help of Colorado State Historical Funding, Historic Boulder has undertaken extensive structural
stabilization and restoration of the exterior of the house, including reconstruction of the porch, cupola, and
repainting following a historic paint analysis.
This National Register nomination has been prepared on behalf of property owners Carmela Weber and
David Secunda property and will be presented to the Colorado State Historic Preservation Board on May
17th, 2019 If the State Board votes to approve the nomination, the documentation will be forwarded to the
Keeper of the National Register for consideration of Listing.
ANALYSIS:
The property is being nominated under National Register Criterion C as a well-preserved example of late-
Victorian Italianate house design in Boulder.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the Board vote to forward a recommendation for the nomination of this historically
and architecturally significant property to the National Register of Historic Places.
