City Council Review of the Landmark Alteration Certificate for 835 Pine Street.
The City Council reviewed the Landmark Board’s decision on Tuesday, April 10 . There was
considerable discussion by the City Council about the size, location, design of the proposed
garage and the board’s application of the design guidelines in assessing the proposal. The City
Council unanimously upheld the board’s decision but considered that the conditions of
approval (especially locating the building north and east on the property) should be fulfilled
through the Landmark design review committee process. Discuss at meeting.
Revisions to the Downtown Urban Design Guidelines (Signs)
A request to publish the draft revisions to the draft revisions design guidelines was published
in the Daily Camera per the Rulemaking process. To date, no comments about the draft
guidelines have been received. Discuss at meeting.
Landmarks Board Appointment
The City Council will be interviewing board candidates on Tuesday, May 8 and making
appointments at its Tuesday, May 15 meeting.
Landmarks Board Retreat.
The retreat will be arranged for a time after the June 6 meeting (hopefully the new board
member’s first meeting). Discuss at meeting.
Historic Preservation Month
May is Historic Preservation month which will begin with the reading of an official declaration
by the City Council at its May 1 meeting. The Heritage Preservation Award Ceremony will take
place on May 14 beginning at 6 pm in the Community House at Chautauqua. Discuss possible
historic preservation project award nominations at meeting.
Civic Area – East Book End
The City of Boulder has hired architectural historian Carl McWilliams to survey 12 non-
designated properties that are over 50 years old in the East Bookend of the Civic Area. This
information will provide documentation of those sites and help inform decisions made as part

National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) Forum – July 18 -22, 2018
The biennial NAPC Forum will be held in Des Moines, Iowa from July 18 to 22. Landmarks
Board members and staff have attended in the past and have found the forum to be very

worthwhile. The CLG grant proposal to fund the attendance for Landmarks Board members
attendance was not approved, however, the City is able to provide funding for 2 members to
attend. Update at meeting.
ON-GOING PROJECTS
Atrium Building
The Atrium Building will be considered as part of the East Bookend Planning effort. Historic
Boulder has agreed to continue keeping the March 2015 application to landmark the Atrium on
hold as exploration of these options continues. Update at meeting.
