HomeMy WebLinkAbout00 - 2006 Master Plan Study SessionCentral Records City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department MEMORANDUM ~~~~~~ - ~~~~ a~ TO: Parks and Recreation Advisory Boazd FROM: Pazks and Recreation Department Staff SUBJECT: June 19, 2006 Master Plan Study Session DATE: June 15, 2006 As we move forwazd in the Master Plan process, it is time to begin discussions conceming the department's Vision Plan, and its relevant strategies and costs. This process is intended to result in quantitatively identifying the gap between our fiscally constrained plan and our vision plan. It is critical that we gather the Park and Recreation Advisory Board's perspectives regazding the department's Vision Plan. We hope to heaz your thoughts at this study session and appreciate your review of the attached document prior to the meeting. The points below aze a broad summary of the details from the staff input which are included in the attached document. Department-Wide • Renewable Energy Fuels System • "Place Making" and community engagement • Imaging / Branding - Consistent, Identity, Signage, Attractive • Professional Development (Action and Vision) Recreation • Multi-Use Indoor Sports Facility • Reservoir Redevelopment • Flatirons Redevelopment • Multi-use Fields concentrated in one or few azeas (including synthetic tur~ • Outdoor Aquatics Redevelopment • Sports Alliance Funding/Economic Development • Teen/Interactive Fitness • SBRC Redevelopment • Outdoor Biking Facility Parks • Multi-Modal Connections • Weed Free/Organically Treated Pazks • Flowers/Demo Garden • Contextual Design • Fancy Dog Pazks -"Pay to Bark" • Walk Boulder System To start the `visioning' discussion, the following questions were posed to department staff. We suggest that these would be useful for the PRAB discussion as well. 1. What would Boulder's pazk and recreation system look like without funding constraints? 2. What is the wish list we've heard from the community? 3. What would other cities want to emulate? 4. What would we win awazds for? 5. What would a New York Times newspaper article report on - what would be national, positive news? The focus of the meefing will be to get specific ideas from the PRAB on a vision for the department. Then, the next steps for staff will be to quantify costs for items in the Action and Vision Plans. We will have additional follow-up study sessions and discussions with the PRAB. As we move farther into the process, we would like to schedule some field trips to vazious recreation facilities (Boulder Reservoir, Flatirons Golf Course, South Boulder Recreation Center), developed parks (North Boulder and Hazlow Platts) and undeveloped park sites (Valmont), and other sites if the PRAB thinks it would be useful.
