Dunng the social hour, members and
fnends rubbed shoulders with present and
former state, county and ciry elected offic~als,
many of whom aze PBC members The an-
nual dmner and meeung af PLAi~1-Boulder
County glowed with the warmth of old fnend-
stups and new acquamtances, as well as heart-
felt cheers for good works accompl~shed
The members present elected a slate of
15 boazd members for 20~2, 10 of them con-
nnumg and five new m the boazd fLghhghts
of the evenmg were the presentahons of
awards and the del~ghtful remarks of the
evening's featured speaker, Sena[or Ed
Perlmutter, president pro tem of the Colorado
~enate

nual awazds some years back, but the boazd

cnuc m both crty and county affaus, the boazd
expressed its grat~mde for her firm support
of the goals of PLAN-Boulder County
As long-ume actrve members of PBC,

from the boazd and the sustamed applause of
the audience

Bill DeOreo moved m Boulder m 1974
to attend [he Untversrty of Colorado, where
he recerved degrees m both crvil and env~-
ronmen[al engmeenng After scrvmg bnefly
with [he City of Boulder utiltty depar[ment,
he became an en~nneenng consultant on wa-
ter-related issues, wrth an emphasis on de-
mand management and water conservat~on
Ne served on the city Open Space Board from
1985 to 1990 He helped orgazuze the Old
North Boulder Neighborhood Association
and, most recently, led an unsuccessful at-
temp[ to srop [he crty from replacmg the last
remammg brt of Olmsted Park wuh a plat-
form tenms caurt
Steve Pomerance ~s well known for his
sernce on the Boulder C~ty Council, where
he worked on ~ssues such as the crty's raw
wd[er management plan, the In[egrated Plan-
mng Pro~ect and the Commumty Housmg
AfFordabrLty Program Dunng a penod be-
tween council sunts, he led the Slow Growth ~
Imuauve to address Boulder's rapid mdus-
[nal and commercial ~rowth He did nat seek
re-elecnon m 1997, and smce then has con-
hnued to work on many fronts, mcludmg
helpmg to start an effort to address statewide
growth through the mmanve process, result-
mg m Amendment 24 on the 2000 ballot
Sharan Rosall's eclectic expenence
broadens the scope of the PBC boazd She
was formerly on the boazds of che Chautauqua
Assoc~auon and the Mental Health Center,
and remuns acuve m FIis[onc Boulder and
the Hentage Roundtable She currently serves
on [he Boulder County Parks and Open Space
Board and is ou[gomg chair of [he city's Land-
mazks Preservanon Adv~sory Board
Pat Shanks, a resident of Boulder, ~s a
reseazch geochenust w~th the U S Geologr
cal Survey. Some of h~s current reseazch m-
volves potenaally tox~c elements m the envi-
ronment, nune dra~nage issues, and hannful
effects on ecosystems He also has an acf~ve
mterest m a broad spectrum of issues related
to land use, transporta~on, conservat~on, and
a clean envuonment
John Spitzer, a Boulder res~dent smce
1975, has a master's degree m azc}utecture
from CU. He led the successful 1988 cam-
paign to keep the mam l~brary downtown. He
speazheaded [he effort that defeated [he so-
called Seconds Count imnauve on the 2000
c~ty ballot, wh~ch threatened to elim~nace
more than 75 traffic miugation devices
throughout Boulder He has served as chazr
of the city's Envuonmental Advisory Boazd
and is currently chair of the Downtown De-
s~gn Adv~sory Boazd
Retiring from the board
Frve 6oazd members asked not to be con-
sidered for a 2002 term. Matt Appelbaum,
who served as cha~r two yeazs ago, and Jom
Teter, last yeaz's chair, both cited pressures
of theu profess~onal hves and other volun-
teer comm~tments.
Beth Pommer's act~ve role on the city
plaruung boazd, along w~th otherrespons~bih-
ties, made her dec~de not [o cont~nue

forced fum to step down from [he board
Janet Roberts, who has futhfully served
for many years, felt that the time had come to
retue. However, she will remam an off-board
resource, mamtazmng the PLAN-Boulder az-
cluves and ass~svng with the newsletter
Continuing on the board
Bruce Bland, who filled m so capably as
achng chazr the las[ few months of 2001, will
conunue his valuable conmbuaons on land
use and biological issues. He did not allow
his name to be cons~dered for chazr because
he ~s currently servmg as president of the
Boulder County Nature Associauon
David Cook w~ll go on shanng Ivs knowl-
edge of transportauon concems
Gwen Dooley cant~nues to bnng to the
boazd her valuable expenence both as a
former c~ty council member and as a present
member of the ciry of Boulder's Parks mmd
Recreauon Boazd
Linda Andes Georges, wrrently a mem-
berof the Open Space Boazd of Trustees, will
conhnue ro contnbute her achve mterest m
and knowledge of w~ldl~fe and land use mat-
ters.
Ricky Weiser, with her long expenence
m both county and city affa~rs, will also stay
on the boazd
Sara Michl, m addiuon to her achve con-
tnbuvon to the soluhon of many board mat-
ters, will conunue her vital role as programs
co-cha~r, plannmg and orgamzmg PBC's
weekly Fnday luncheon meenngs at the Um-
versrty Club
Officers
The four other holdovecs, Crystal Gray,
Jane Greenfield, Clmre Levy and Brad
Snyder, will serve as officers of the boazd for
2002
Co-Churs This responstbihty will be
shared by Crystal Gray and Claire Levy.
Crystal is d~rector of the Adams County
Parks Department. ABoulder res~dent, she has
served on the city's Open Space Boazd and
on rts Pazks and Recreahon Advisory Boazd
She currently serves on the boazds of the Af-
fordable HousmgAlhance and I-Lstoric Boul-
der

mg in land use law She was an assistant
Jefferson County attomey from 1989 ro 1999
She ~s a former member of the Boulder
County Pazks and Open Space Advisory
Boazd and cusently serves as a commiss~oner
on the Boulder County Housmg Authonty

PBC Secretary She was formerly a Boulder
crty attorney, and is now m pnvate pracnce

Treasurer Brad Snyder, a longhme PBC
member, retumed to the boazd last year after
havmg served m the 1980s. Unul retrnng late

PBC conhnues to keep a close watch on
achvmes of Pmnacle Towers, Inc., wtuch has
revised ~ts proposal ro spec~fy erechng or`
one 450-foot tower mstead of three. PLAI~

Jeffersan County Plamm~g Comm~ssion heaz-
mgs Feb 6 and 13 In a Jan 29 letter to the
Jefferson County Plazwng Commission, PBC
restated rts opposmon ro the huge tower and

tam peak only 200 feet from the Boulder
