,,,~ Dear Parks and Recreahon Board Member
I am a Boulder resident and I bicycle, often with my 4 year old daughter m tow,
almost daily We have a unique and beautifizl senes of bike paths m Boulder They aze
one of the only places where cycl~sts and pedestrians can escape from motor vehicles and
I strongly urge you not to allow electnc bikes on them
The main azgument m favor of allov~nng electnc bikes, seems to revolve azound
the hope that more people would use the paths, thereby creatmg more alternatroe
transportation users IY s true that some people who otherwise wouldn't nde m:ght be
convuiced to buy and use one of these ve}vcles, however I ttunk that their numbers would
be matched or exceeded by people, who were, for nght or wrong, scazed off of the paths
because of a perceived notion of what electnc bikes would bring In other words, we
itught be lrnng with the noise and downfalls that electnc bikes create, and m the end,
have fewer people usmg the paths Perhaps a compromise would be to allow people vv~th
some kmd of ined~cal need to have an mdividual pernut to ride, but to draw the lme there
I also worry that ~f a general ordmance is passed, enforcement vv~ll be impossible
Two days ago, a homemade electnc scooter that sounded like a~et-ski passed me as I was
wallung home If we open the door wrth lutle or no enforcement vv~ll ve}ucles likes these
show up on the Creek path~ Maybe
~ Finally, if tlvs ordmance is passed, rt will be an advertrsement encouragmg the
purchase and use of electric bikes for anyone and everyone "Cruise the Boulder paths
w~thout breakmg a sweat~ Tounsts line up and rent an electnc bicycle~"
Is that really what we want~
Thank you,
Janet Streater
