HomeMy WebLinkAbout7 - Lovers Hill quotation from F.L. Olmsted Jr..» ~ January 13, 2002 TO. Pazks and Recreation Advisory Boazd (PRAB) Jan Geden, Pazks and Recreat~on Department Director Cate Bradley, Parks Planner FROM: Susan Osborne, PRAB member RE Lovers' Hill Quotation From F.L. Olmsted, Jr. What a temfic tour most of the PRAB had on Saturday. It is excit~ng mdeed to see new pazks takmg shape, and it is a very good t~me to be on the Boazd Thanks to Kate and Doug for putting the tour together for us The last stop on the tour was the recently completed Lovers' Hill overlook. It renunded me that I had recently read a quote about Lovers' Hill from Boulder's first city plan. The plan's author was Frednck Law Olmsted, Jr. - the son of the man who designed New York's Central Park and Amenca's most mfluential and well-known landscape azclutect. The son worked m tus father's office but had as lus Focus the development of city plans for commumties throughout the Umted States at the eazly part of the cen[ury The Improvement of Boulder, Colorado by Frednck Law Olmsted, Jr. was ongmally ~ pubhshed in 1910 for the Boulder City Improvement Assoc~at~on. It is my thought that the quote would make for a fine small brass plaque It could perhaps be set mconspicuously on the flagstone path or platform. Here goes• "To those crtizens of Boulder who are not fanuhaz with the view we urgently recommend a stroll, some pleasan[ Sunday, along the top of Lovers' Hill . The view, especially toward sunset ume, is one that cannot be matched m many thousand ~ules of travelmg." Isn't it fitUng~ I am not sure what is needed to add this connechon to our past to the pazk - perhaps ~ust the Boazd's agreement. I think that I heard that ttus construcrion came m under budget so there may even be a balance to cover the cost. Thank you for your thoughtful considerauon of ttus idea P''~ 5....-
