City of Boulder Pazks and Recreahon Advisory Boazd
Boulder, Colorado
Re Soccer in Boulder
Dear Members of the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
The contmued rapid growth of team sports is creatmg a cnsis withm the Crty of
Boulder To put it bluntly, we are ninning out of room to practice and play games. This
crisis arises from an mcrease in participation in tradrtionally popular sports, mcludmg
soccer, and the mtroduchon to Boulder of newer sports such as ulhmate Fnsbee and
lacrosse
Between youth soccer, adult soccer, the CU Women's Soccer Team, high school
soccer and rugby the Pleasant View Soccer Complex has already exceeded ~ts capacrty
In addition, practice facilrties, which historically have been our local schools and parks,
aze currently woefully inadequate, with teams squeezing mto smaller and smaller spaces
Not only does tlus make rt very difficult to tram properly, it also increases the potenhal
for m~ury as teams ~ockey for posrtion amongst overlappmg traimng azeas The pracrice
field problem has been exacerbated recently by construction at our schools, which has
made certain fields unavailable Add to tlus rumblings from certam school pnncipals
about making their properties off lututs to pnvate non-profit athletic clubs and you begin
to understand the extent of our dilemma
We, in the soccer community, understand that participat~on in local government is
cnhcal for organizations wtth needs such as ours We have been remiss m our
responsibihties because we have failed, m the last few years, to present our case to you
on a regular basis However, ~ust because we have been silent does not mean that we
don't exist or that our needs are being met. The soccer commumty m Boulder is very
large wrth probably 4000 or so youth and adult players, the bulk of these bemg youth
players Add to these the pazents who toil away dnvmg to and cheenng at practices and
games and you have a substantial portion of the populahon of Boulder Undoubtedly, you
are aware of the many docuxnented benefits of youth participation m organized sports and
aze equally aware of the risks mvolved in not providing these opportumties We feel that
it is very important for Boulder to provide proper athlehc facilrties for our cluldren
You now have certain opportumdes to address the field shortage problem First,
/°^ we hope this letter alerts you to the fact that there is a growmg field cnsis, and we wge
~r you work to fastuon an appropnate solution . Second, we ask that you examine the
possibilrty of convertmg some of the currently undeveloped pazk land vv~thin the crty,
such as azeas adjacent to East Boulder Recreation Center, as well as significant parts of
the new Valmont Pazk mto general traming fields While soccer is almost undoubtedly
the largest single team sport usmg pazk lands witlun the city of Boulder, the requested
general trainmg fields could be used by any sport, thus alleviatmg the serious
overcrowdmg among all team sports withm the commumty
The general consensus wrthin the local soccer orgamzations is that the lead time
needed to develop new trazning azeas, coupled vrnth the extent of the current crowdmg,
necessitates rapid action on the part of the city of Boulder. We offer our assistance to the
Pazks and Recreation Advisory Boazd m evaluahng this issue as well as m developmg a
plan for new facilities Because of the size and dedicahon of the local soccer commuruty,
we feel that it is imperatrve, when devising pohcy regardmg recreahonal facilihes, to take
the needs of our constituency into consideration. We look forward to discussing tlus wrth
you
Sincerely,
~ ~
