Chlorine Spill in Boulder Creek
Walsh Environmental Sciendsts and Engineers, an environmental firm hired by the city of Boulder,
has found the cause of a fish kill that was discovered in Boulder Creek on Sept. 7. Based on its
evaluatioq Walsh believes that the source of the Ssh kill originated from a lealdng pipe connected
to the Scott Carpenter Swimming Pool, located at 30th and Arapahoe
The city hired Walsh to conduct an independent investigation of the fish kill The month-long
investigation included extensive interviews and field testing to evaluate possible causes. Walsh
,^ determined that the most probable cause was concentrated chloruie water that drained from the pool
~ through a leaking pipe The leaked contents seeped through cracks in the nearby pool maintenance
buIlding foundarion and into the floor drain From this floor drain, the chlorine-rich water traveled
into the storm drain and into Boulder Creek
The resuks of the investigation will be provided to the State Water Quality Control Division and the
Colorado Division of Wildlife The City will correct the pipe and drainage connection problem and
will work with state agencies on the appropriate next steps The City takes full responsibility for what
happened and will contuiue to work on the suuation diligently until all problems are resolved. The
cost to make the necessary repairs is not yet known.
The fish were discovered in Boulder Creek in the area between 28th Street and Foothills Pazkway.
City officials, the Boulder County Health Department and state officials immediately assessed the
situation and began to seazch for the cause of the Ssh kill Other agencies im~olved in the evaluation
are the State Water Quality Control Drnsion and the Colorado Division of Wildlife
