Two pubhc meehngs, advemsed m the Dazly Camera were held on September 18 and 19, 2000 at the Chautauqua D'uung Hall. Four of the five panc~ipants attendmg the September 18"' meeung supported the tdea of locating the nnk at Chautauqua Pazk. It appears, however, that many of those attending the meehng on September 19`" were erther not m favor of locating the rink at Chautauqua Park or were supportive of the idea of havmg an ice skahng ruik but were concerned about issues such as no~se and traffic. ~ Notes from September 18, and 19, 2000 ~ Community Meeting Regarding Temporary Ice Rink at Chautauqua ..., Seotember 18. 2000 Number of Participants - 5 Summary of Participant Comments Anthony Riddle, 700 Grant Place- Lrves m the azea. Raised concerns about parking, pazkmg enforcement, pedestrian access. Indicated that even if these concems were met he would not want the ice arena at the park no matter what. Mr. Riddle believes that Chautauqua is not a good neighbor to hve near, and he does not want to expand its use. If the ice arena does go m, he encourages a shuttle. Does not want to see pazkmg on the North side of baselme. Jason Ramus, 900 Basehne (a cottager) - Lives m the azea and mdicates that even the noise from concerts is mimmal, and he does not beheve the ice arena noise will be of great concern. He beheves the benefits to the commumty for havmg this outdoor skate azena m the park w~ll outweigh any concerns Beheves the nnk is a necessity Terry Rodrigue - 1076 Lmcoln Place - Lives m the area. Supportive of the idea. ,,.. Beheves there will be issues that need to be addressed but that the commumty needs to '~... figure out a way to make use of the resource of Chautauqua. He believes that ice- skahng is an acrivity that is compahble wtth the natural beauty of Chautauqua. The ice arena will be an achvtty for all ages and people from all over Boulder will benefit. "Just because I hve up here and can walk, does not mean I should want to exclude people who have to dnve up here to en~oy the pazk " Debra Ordway - 3289 W 26th St. - Boulder Creek Feshval folks have a reputahon of developing a set of rules for runnmg somethmg, and shckmg by them Chautuauqua is a perfect opportumty to "create commumty" through the ice azena Chautauqua is one of the threads that made this commumty grow and we should bring people here to appreciate it Boulder Creek Events folks will keep it peaceful and lackmg in chaos. We have to take the nsk. If there are problems, they can be addressed as they come up. Jim Starry - 34885 Boulder Canyon - This ice arena is bnngmg Boulder back to its roots of usmg Chautauqua as a place for all to shaze Lets support this on a tnal basis and see how it goes. ~ September 19, 2000 ~ Number of Participants - 27 ~ Neal Garland, 31 Chautauqua Pazk, (cottager), long wondered why a commumty the size of Boulder does not have an ice arena. Believes it would be better at Crossroads Mall Carolanne McKiman, indicated that she lives neazby, no address listed - Ice Rink is a great idea. Husband is m busmess on the mall, beheves the ice azena is a misguided attempt to bnng business to the dming hall, and thmks rt should go neaz someone else's business such as her husbands Likes to run especially m the wmter, and hkes the quiet. Beheves that the park ts a refuge of peace and quiet and a refuge for wildhfe, and that an ice azena is completely inappropnate particulazly with lights and power. She suggests a wildlife study to determme impacts on wildlife "We do not need to fill all our empty spaces." Repulsed by this idea Business is the mohvator behind this. We do not want electromc amusement Mary Ellen Thorne, 1075 l Oth, lrves m the area. This is a great location for an ice arena. Bnngs people to appreciate what the foothills have to offer Beheve the ]ights and sound can be addressed. Ice-skatmg is a great fam~ly achvity. There is shll room for quiet on the trails of the pazk This is a public pazk, and not a pnvate refuge for people who hve here. Bob Nauman, 3A Chautauqua (cottager), mdicahng that he is biased because he lives m Chautauqua but believes the tdea is poorly conceived. There is currently a constant stream of people who use this park. He would hke "a place where we can have qmet." He would like to see the ice nnk go somewhere else where there is parkmg. Don't thmk this is a res~dent vs non-resident issue If this goes through there aze safety concems to be addressed. Harriet Paddock, 525 13th Street, l~ves m the azea Husband ~s Lawrence Paddock, first chazrman of the Parks Board. She and husband who was not able to be at the meetmg believe this is the wrong place for an ice nnk. The pazk is already overused. From ^' "° their backyard bordenng on the meadow, they can here people's conversarions as they ^~-- hike Noise will carry and destroy the qmet Matthew Thorne, 1075 l Oth Street, hves m the area, (Young man of about 8). This ~s a big area. Put it here Josh Taxman, owns property m the area, but does not hve here, 724 Walnut Street. Is concerned about the look of the nnk as part of the histonc character. Not opposed to it if it could be made aesthetically pleasmg, and with character. Beheves the restaurant, which faced a lot of opposirion at first, has been a success for the pazk. Concerned also about noise mingarion Ihla Hooyer, 726 Grant Place, hves m the area Is m favor of an ice arena but not m Chautauqua Pazk. Too much noise polluhon already, any other place. Neighbors put up ~rnth all the cazs m the summer, and don't want to put up with them m the wmter too Grant Street m particulaz is a problem for traffic. Mircea Fotino, 685 l Oth Street, hves m the azea Snow shoemg and cross-country skiing in the park will be ruined. The park is supposed to be seremty. Pazkmg is a problem. Opposed strongly. ~ Red ????, 917 Grant, hves m the area Concerned about the safety because of icmess on the streets m the wmter. Denise Bedoya, 604 l Oth St., hves m the area. Wants to register disapproval Beheves there will be problems with noise and traffic. This is not the nght place Gerry Dameron, 1071 Uhca Circle 'The carnrval atrnosphere people aze descnbmg is not what happened last year It was a pleasant family expenence. This can be a commumty event and a gathenng place for people to come together The expenence last yeaz was cozy Boulder Creek Events put on a mce program Parkmg m the winter, even with the ice azena would never approach the parking in the summer. Dan ????, 730 Lmcoln, lives in the azea Currently ambiguous about trus. Do have some concerns about the cars and the hours of operarion Avoided the locarion downtown last year because it was downtown Dee, l~ves m Boulder, did not sign m. I thmk this is a magmficent area and an ice arena is a wonderful achvity. Virginia Lauderdale, 1940 Walnut, unhappy to see rt here Womed that the green would be damaged and that it would not be aesthehcally pleasmg. ~'' ~r.. 3 Mary Barltett, 777 Lmcoln, lives m the azea Not have an opmion yet, but wants to see the Green retumed to its ongmal shape. ,,,,~ Liz Goodman, 3A Chautauqua (cottager), opposed Sharon Caufield, 766 Grant Place, lives m the area. Thuilc it would be OK but want to look at traffic mingahon. Madeline Clair, 1516 Columbme, lives m the area Thmks an ice arena at Chautauqua ~s a great idea Skatmg is a family achvity. Would love to see it up here. Speeding and traffic in the area is a problem no matter what. David Clair, 1516 Columbme, lrves in the area. Wants to see the ice arena here. The city needs to address speedmg and traffic. The ~ce azena folks should not bear that problem Denise Bebbington, 770 Racquet Lane. Support the idea of an ice arena at Chautauqua Has family that skate Thinks this is a grand locarion. -~~ ,-•.o 4
