Handout, Letter from Ed Self, update to packet of information regarding pocket park on Hickory Avenu.. FG(~ ~~~c ti~~.~ ~ P~ ~I~l~o Ed Self ~ 980 McIntire Street Boulder, Colorado 80303 (303)543-1411 edself~a,)sni.net July 24, 2000 Pazks and Recreation Advisory Board, Hello. Here is an update to the packet of information we submitted last week regarding a pocket park on Kickory Avenue, near Baseline and Foothills Pazkway. We haue continued to receive support primarily in the form of petition signatures. In this packet, you will find eight additional sheets of signatures. That brings our total now to over 230 signatures. Over half of those signatures are from people who live within a four block radius of the Hickory Site. There are approximately 100 signatures from folks who live in other parts of Boulder, but support a community gazden for South Boulder. South Boulder really does need at least one garden site so people do not have to drive 25 minutes across town to have a garden plot. Our neighborhood has a whole generation of young childrea who wouid greatly benefit from a nearby park. Our neighborhood has taken great pleasure in the vision of a place where ldds can ~ play while adults garden. What a great ideat Now, we ju~t need your support. Many people in the neighborhood have offered volunteer labor to help construct the park and garden and to help the Transportation DeQartment relocate their currern activities from the site. We are also willing to pursue some creative avenues to help fund this park and garden. Our hope is that this contribution of neighborhood effoR can put this pocket park on a fast track which will allow portions of it to be phased in starting as early as neact year. Thank you, ~ Ed Self (on behalf of the many supporters of the Hickory Pocket Pazk and Community Garden) r^~ 1..,, Hickory Pocket Park and Community Garden Would you like a beautiful garden and pazk nearby to grow veggies, play with your kids or play volleyball? Broadway Boulder CO 80304 To Whom It May Concem: t~n~t Doan 4494 Gteenbriar Bivd. Boulder CO 80305 I have received notice that the Boazd is considering creating additional community gazdens in South Boulder. I recently bought a home in South Boulder and am interested in community gardening. I have visited the North Boulder gazdens and considered renting a plot. However, because I live in Shanal~an Ridge, very far south Boulder, I felY that that the location was just too far to be useful. "~ The concept of communiry gazdens is one that should be supported by the Board. ;~ Community gazdens aze not only useful to the gazdeners themselves, but they provide a community in and of themselves with a positive mission and common goal. In additioq aesthetically, the gazdens provide a wondedul visual for passerbys along with providing an interesting reminder of where food actually comes from. I urge the Board to create additional gardens in South Boulder to allow the residents in those azeas to have the opportunity to be a part of the Community Gardens. Thank you for your consideration. It is my understanding that a Parks and Rec advisory boazd meeting will be held on July 24 to consider buying the church property to make it into a city pazk. I cannot attend the meeting but I am strongly in favor of converting the church land to a pazk. ,,~„_ Sincerely, ~X.~ ~~ Alan FitzGerrell 875 HartFord Drive Boulder, CO 80305 ~ ~... J~1y is, Zooo ,,w. ~ The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board c/o Chris Dropinski, Director Parks and Recreation Department City of Boulder 3198 Broadway Boulder, CO 80304 Dear Mr. Dropinski: I strongly support the City's purchase of land being offered by Mesa Memorial Baptist Church for the creation of a pocket park. This property along Table Mesa Drive, Yale, and Hartford provides a wonderful opportunity to enhance an older 1960's neighborhood that currently has no parks. As Boulder becomes built-out, it is so important to retain pieces of open land within the neighborhood for "breathing room" and open vistas. From the church lot, ~ my family enjoys watching sunsets over the Flatirons and finding star constellations at night. One can even see the very top of Long's Peak from the far corner! And next to the church lot is a small creek (wet only in the Spring) which could be an aesthetic amenity with a little landscaping. Because the land is flat, it is ideally suited for passive recreation such as gardening, dog exercising, picnicking, etc. I'm sure the neighborhood will actively participate in deciding how they'd Iike to see the park shape-up. We'll be out of town on July 24, but I'm sure others in the neighborhood will make a show of support at the meeting. We've lived in the neighborhood for ten years and have good relationships with all our neighbors. Everyone I've talked with is enthusiastic about preserving the church lot as a pocket park. So please vote to purchase the property and make our neighborhood happy! Sincerely, ~~~~~~ Phyllis Gunn 860 Hartford Drive '~ Boulder, Co 80305 ~...
