MEMORANDUM To: Members of the Pazks and Recreation Advisory Board From: Chns Dropinski, Director Re: Items from the Duector DO NOT REMOVE - PRAB File Matenal Soruce Pool Repair In the 1999 season, Spruce Pool was losing an estimated 30,000 gallons of water a day Isolation and pressure testing of the pool's systems indicated that the water was lost through leak(s) in the retum (water returning from the filtranon system to the pool) system The exact locarion of the leak(s) could not be deternuned because the return pipmg is cast into the concrete stmcture of the pool vessel Associated Pool Builders, Inc was hired to cap and abandon the existmg return system, and to u~stall ~ a new return system, the piping contained withing the gutter system of the pool The work was completed and successfully pressure tested the first week of Mazch Staff is confident tlus remedy will effectroely address the water loss problem Deoartment Playground Issue at Tantra Park Dunng the February, 2000 Parks and Recreahon Advisory Boazd Meeting, a citizen from the Tantra Pazk azea discussed certa~n maintenance issues sunounding the Tantra Pazk playground azea In particulaz, tlus citizen spoke about a piece of playground equipment which she claims had been broken for two months and had not been replaced Our playground mazntenance staffvisited the site and inspected the piece of playground equipment The piece of equipment that this crt~zen u~formed us about is called a"Daisy" spruig toy, manufactured by Kompan We have vanous other pieces of playground equipment manufactured by Kompan located m several parks, including East Boulder Commumty Center and Meadow G1enPazk Attached aze photographs of this particulaz piece of equipment in Tantra Park The manufacturer clauns t}us parnculaz playground piece is suued for very young children Appazently last fall, one of the paddle seats was vandalized by someone who smashed one of the paddle seats with a large rock The rock broke one ofthe paddles A citizen used a saw to even out the jagged pieces, and pazk staff sanded the remainu~g part of the seat to smooth the edges ..~. ~~ The "Daisy" spring toy retails for $725, and the replacement seat costs $265, less labor costs to disassemble and replace the broken seat Staff made the decision to not replace the one paddle and ^+ extend the life ofthe equipment fizrther However, upon fiuther commumcation with this citizeq she has informed us that much lazger and heavier children aze abusing the equipment causing part of the seat to be craskung into the ground when heavier children attempt to use this eqmpment Staffis experiencing problems withKompan equipment throughout the system While the Kompan equipment is very interachve and provides for uruque play experiences for children, it appeazs the equipment is not standing up to the tremendous use it receives This may be due, in part, to the equipment being manufacturered with wood, rather than steel or plasrics We plan to remove tlus piece of playground equipment and will, as time allows, replace this Kompan playground piece with another type of spruzg toy from another manufacturer Boulder Poseidons Swim Team
