Tree Placement in North Boulder Park
During the November, 1999, PRAB meeting, a question was raised about the placement of trees
m North Boulder Park It was reported that some new trees which were planted at the north end
of North Boulder Pazk aze not positioned appropnately to provide shade to parents watclung
clvldren and the location chosen for this planting has eliminated an informal volleyball court that
was used m this locahon
Forestry staffwas contacted concerning this issue Forestry staffplanted three Linden trees in this
specific location during the spring of 1998 Numerous people had been requesting more trees in
North Boulder Pazk, particulazly azound the playground to eventually provide needed shade to those
using the playground. Forestry staffbegan the process to plant numerous trees along the south edge
of the playground and were asked to plant some on the north edge to allow parents to be away from
the playground in the shade but still be witkun reasonable distance to the playground to provide
adequate supervision for children using the playground Forestry normally plants trees 10-20 feet
from sidewalks to avoid conflicts with bicyclists, walkers, snowplows, etc later when the trees
mature In this particulaz location, staff had to plant the trees further than the 10-20 foot standazd
m order to avoid major urigauon and electrical lines running through the site While it ~s possible to
.-~.
~
transplant these three trees from this site, these spec~fic locahons aze as close to the sidewalk as is ,,,.~
possible due to the utility lines in the azea Removing trees from this location will not provide the _
shade that the public has asked us to provide
Based on further review of the azea, it appears the trees in question still allow for informal volleyball
to be played in tlus azea If the d'uection of the court ~s run from west to east, mstead of north to
south, there is adequate room for both the uees as well as volleyball usage. There is also a lazge open
play azeas to the west of this location wtrich would allow for volleyball courts running north to south
Staffbelieves that the need for shade in tlus area is important and aze not incLned to remove the trees
from this site at this time
