Handout, Hickory Community Garden Report 2001 Gardening Seasonr~~~~ ~ ~ ~~~ ~~o i ~ ~~~ ~~~ Hickocy Community Garden Report - 2001 Gardening Season There are 28 plots at the Hickory Gazden site When the gazden was established m the spnng of 2001, at the request of two neighbonng households, the gardens were only advertised wrthm a half-rmle radius of the site locano^ There was no general advertiseme~t made C~ty-wide for these gardens Of the 28 plots, 24 were rented The neighborhood group that mitiated the gazden recerved a Neighborhood Block Grant of $3,000. This money helped to buy water hydrants, soil and compost, tools, wheelbarrows and a new shed for garden storage. The Pazks and Recreahon Department suppi~ed addrtwrtal imgation matenal and insialled the watenng system The Department also provided a fence, wh~ch secures the Transportat~on Department's area W± est~mate the total cost of the garden mcludmg labor was around $8,000. The site already had fencme surroundtng ~t. The gardeners have held three meetmgs at md~v~dual's homes and at the gazden to plan for future pro~ects and socialize w~th fellow gardeners The foDowing informarion applies to the City's entire Community Gardening Program There are 275 garden plots of varymg s~zes utthzed each season servmg approx~mately 500 part~c~pants. The gardeners donated over $600 to prov~de funding for 14 low-mcome residents to garden The Foothills ,,.~ommumty and H~ckory Garden S~tes aze orgamc growmg pract~ces only The North Bouider site ts one ~..~tf organic and half chem~cal fertilizer only Any new garden site developed will be orgamc only The Gty supplies water, portable rest rooms, aash collecnon, mamtams the imganon systems and prov~des pazameter mowmg for ail the gazden sites Composnng classes and workshops were offered to all gardeners for free this year Next yeaz, orgamc gardemng classes w~il be offered for free to the ~ardeners. Approximately 64 yazds of compost were dehvered to the gazdens and they have produced approximately 50 yazds of compostable debris.
