4C - Healthy Community Award~ n ~- ~ ~R~ c~ )0 ~~U I ~'/Zf~ fYlee {~ The American Park and Recreation Society presented the City of Boulder ~ Parks and Recreation Department with its "Healthy Community Award" on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001. The award was presented at the National Recreation and Park Association Annual Congress which was held in Denver, Oct. 3-6, 2001. The award honors cities that promote the fitness and wellness of their residents by providing outstandmg recreation programming, participating in collaborations with other agencies and showing leadership and initiative in this area. Community programs offered by the Parks and Recreation Department in collaboration with outside agencies mclude: health screening and risk detection, low cost blood tests, flu shots and health education clinics supported by local health providers. A vanety of exercise classes for youth through seniors such as: swimming, 50 plus classes, body sculpting, aerobics, weight training, personal training, and sports training are also offered. City of Boulder employees are staying healthy through participation in the emp-oyee wellness and in~ury/iliness prevention program. The Parks and Recreation Department ensures that facilities and programs are accessible for all ages and ability levels through the EXPAND program for ,~- people with disabdities; the youth recreation program for youth living in ~ subsidized housing; and program subsidies provided through the reduced rate program.
