Re: Proposal for 2005 Martin Luther King Celebration
A 2004 HRC work plan objective has been to discuss ~~~ays of creating one major Martin Luther King
(1~~,K) Day Celebration in Boulder with community groups active in organizing past celebrations.
Mai~agnes and I have met several times with representatives of community a oups that have been
involved in organizing past I~~..K celebrations. These community b oups include Boulder Asian
Pacific Alliance, Boulder County Community Action Program, Family Learning Center, New
Horizons Cooperative Preschool, Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center, United Black Women of
Boulder Valley and Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB). These groups have expressed
appreciation for the HRC's interest and support in helping to build NII.K Day in Boulder as a
significant civil ribhts day of celebration, remembrance, education and tribute. The following are plans
for a 2005 MLK Day Celebration that these groups have agreed to:
Date: Monday, January 17, 2005
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Location: Boulder Theater
• Inter-generational; keep events for al] ages, froin toddlers to toddling.
• Morning will be for l~ids' activities with stor~rtelling and art projects.
• Rally on the Pearl St Mall and parade to the Boulder Theater.
• Possible keyriote speaker is Dr.Vincent Harding, an associate of the
late Rev. Martin Luther King. Dr. Harding now serves as Professor of Religion and Social
Transformation at Illiff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado. He has written numerous
books, including Martin Luther King: The Inconvenient Hero.
• Human Rights Fair with teach-ins from numerous Boulder community groups will be part

• Entertainment and teach-ins will alternate on the main stage. Teach-ins will be
encouraging year ]ong work with the organizations involved, not just 1 day celebration.
• Possible emcees are Judge Tijana R. Cole, the juvenile Court Magistrate and Pen~e]d
Tate, Attorney and civil rights advocate.
• YOAB will do all of the things done in past including: stickers, art contest, essay contest,
RTD ads, serving as parade leaders, etc.
• Celebration to include `birthday cake'.
Funding: It is requested that the HRC reserve $10,000 of 2004 Area I Funds for the 2005
MLK Day Celebration. Expenses including facilities rental, key note speaker, promotion,
refreshments will be paid as incurred from the HRC Fund. HRC will be provided monthly
updates of expenses from staff.
