What is the Office of Human Rights?
The City of Boulder's
Office of Human Rights
(OHR) serves a dual
purpose,to enforce
the City of Boulder's
Human Rights ordi-
nance and to support
positrve community
relations. The City of
Boulder Human RighLs
Ordinance is a local
law that protects
against illegal discrimi-
nation within the city
limits of Boulder. The
Ordinance specifically
affords protection
against discrimination
in three areas employ-
ment, housmg and pub-
lic accommodation.
Within these three ar-
eas, the ordinance pro-
hibrcs discnmmatwn
based on oncestry, color,
creed, gender variance,
genetic characteristics,
marital status, mental
disability, physical disabd-
ity, race, re6gion, sex and
sexual orientation. In
housing it also prohib-
rts discnmmation based
on custody of a mmor
child, parenthood and
pregnancy. In employ-
ment it also prohibits
discnminanon based
on age, specifically be-
tween the ages of forty
and sixty-five years.
A copy of the ordi-
nance can be found on

One way that the OHR
supports positrve com-
munity relations is by
staffmg the City of
Boulder Human Rela-
tions Commission
(HRC) The HRC con-
sists of five Gty resi-
dents appointed by
Gty Councd. They act
as an advisory body to
Council and also serve
as a Quasi Judicial
Hearing body for OHR
complaint Appeals.
We will present fur-
ther details about the
OHR and the HRC in
upcoming editions of
this newsletter.
