Minutes of the March 15, 2000 meeting were approved as received. Final reports for Reg Saner, Torkin Wakefield and Postoley Dancers were approved as received. Gartenmann will include a detailed description of future final reports. Discussion Items 2000 Advertising: Berlin has been negotiating with the Daily Camera for BAC ads. The best offer the Camera will make is a 50% match on advertising. The Camera would like the BAC to establish an advertising pattern before entering into the agreement. A format and design will need to be completed for the ongoing ads. New Grant Category: Berlin and Gartenmann met to discuss the new grant category but tabled the project until materials Berlin received from his Seattle visit could be reviewed. Cultural Master Plan: Gralapp, Berlin and Gartenmann reviewed content and process for updating the Cultural Master Plan. The next step planned is to meet with AHAB members to discuss process. AHAB requested a meeting in late May when a new director will have been • hired. • Public Art Update: Gartenmann reported that an artist has been selected for the art project at the Scott Carpenter Skateboard Park. Calls for entry were sent to area artists for a $30,000 public art project at the Broadway and Baseline pedestrian underpass. Gartenmann attended an open house for the 28th street project and was pleased with the art process to date. An artist has been included in the design team and art elements are being proposed throughout the project. Dairy Center for the Arts Lease: Commissioners reviewed the proposed Dairy lease. The proposal has been approved by the Dairy board and is scheduled to go before City Council May 16. Berlin voiced concerns about the lack of wording to assure all disciplines are represented at the Dairy. As with the BMoCA lease, the City does not want to be involved with managing the facility. The lease requires that no more than 18% of the space is to be used for offices. A City Council and Arts Commission representative are required to be on the Dairy board to ensure the Dairy fulfills its obligations as an art center. The vote was unanimous to approve the Dairy lease. Colorado Dance Festival proposal: CDF submitted a request to serve as a vehicle for the BAC allocated dance monies. With the demise of the Boulder Dance Alliance, the dance community has been without an umbrella organization. The CDF proposes serving as the fiscal agent to regrant funds to local dance organizations to cover rental and/or performance space and purchase dance equipment from the BDA. The Commission had many concerns about the proposal. Wadhams and Landsman will meet with the CDF to hone the proposal and return to the May meeting with a better defined request. • Mini-Grants: Toby Tenenbaum asked for funds for a musical collaboration between Northern Harmony and Musica Aeterna. Northern Harmony members will offer a 3 day workshop ending in a joint performance. The program will be held at the First United Methodist Church. Berlin moved to award the project $400 with Rudy seconding. The motion passed unanimously. Laura Wright, representing Left Hand Reading Series, submitted a grant to produce a monthly reading series. The readings are held the third Thursday of the month at the Dairy Center for the Arts. Hill made a motion to award Wright $400.00. Rudy seconded the motion. The vote was approved unanimously. Amanda Clarke: Clarke requested funds to assist with the framing of students artwork that will be displayed at the civic space in the back of the Soundtrack building. This will be a rotating exhibit with the students being involved in running the gallery, marketing and inclusion of cross curricula. Rudy moved to fund the project for $400.00. Berlin seconded. The motion carried unanimously. University of Colorado Foundation for the Center of the American West: The Foundation is holding a two day conference including community performances, an E-Town broadcast, lectures and workshops about the American West's ethnic and cultural traditions. Funds were requested for a free concert at Chautauqua. Hill moved to fund the project with Landsman seconding. The Foundation was unanimously awarded $400.00. • Jenifer Lee Kuntz: The Boulder Repertory Project is a collaborative performance featuring a variety of Boulder dance artists. The project will take place at the Dairy Center for the Arts. The goal of this project is to unite the local dance community while encouraging and facilitating audience integration and development. Landsman made a motion to award Kuntz $400.00. Hill seconded. The motion carried unanimously. Malia Thompson: Thompson submitted a grant to seek funds to offset costs of producing new work for Minutiae: The Dream Flower Series at the Axis Mundi gallery in May. Thompson displayed examples of the work in progress. Berlin moved to award Thompson $400.00, with Hill seconding. The motion was unanimously approved. Barbara Elo: Elo requested funds to assist with Concentric Circles, an installation including sculpture, film and sound. All the pieces will be combined to create an environment of sensations that will carry the viewer through the physical experience of a poem, the words transformed into sculptural elements. The installation will be at Axis Mundi. Rudy made a motion to fund the request for $400.00. Berlin seconded the motion. Approval was unanimous. Colorado Music Festival: CMF is collaborating with the CU Science Discovery Program offering classes in the summer to interest children in science and sound. "Good Vibrations" and "Electronic Music" will be offered. Funds will assist with scholarships for kids unable to pay admission. Rudy moved to award CMF $392.00 with Berlin seconding. The motion carried unanimously. • Colorado Friends of Old Time Music: Teri Rasmussen asked for funds to assist with the Community Contra Dance on the Plaza. The event will take place two weekends in August on the 13th Street Plaza. Landsman made a motion to award the group $400.00. Rudy seconded. The vote was unanimous. Shannon Kelly: Kelly was not in attendance. The grant was tabled. The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
