Election of Officers: Jude Landsman was elected as Chair. Don Berlin will serve as Vice-Chair. Minutes of the March 21, 2001 were approved as received. BAC Board Representation: BMoCA: Erich Hill Dairy Center for the Arts: Patti Bruck Guild Theater: Alan Rudy, contingent on approval from the Guild Board Special Projects: Cultural Plan update, 28th Street Public Art Project: Don Berlin, Jude Landsman, Erich Hill 28th Street Public Art Project: Gartenmann discussed the upcoming 28th Street renovation project which will begin in late summer. The first portion to undergo construction will be from Baseline Road to Arapahoe. Public art will be incorporated throughout the corridor. The Commission has been asked to participate in all levels of the project. Hill will act as BAC representative on the project. Collage Awards Banquet: The Boulder Arts Commission will be recognized for financial contributions to Collage Children's Museum at the annual banquet on May 24. Landsman and Bruck will represent the BAC. Women of the West Public Art Project: Toni Rosato and members of her class presented a public art proposal which will be part of the Women of the West History Trail. The project will be placed at the Boulder Public Library. The piece will function as anon-static and changing historical marker that will attract public interest to historical sites as well as promoting community education about women's history in the area. Berlin made a motion to award Rosato $3000.00 with Hill seconding. The motion passed unanimously. Technical Assistance Grant for Guild Theater: Kevin Brown, Board President of the Guild asked for funds to hire a staff person to operate the Guild Theater. Berlin moved to award the Guild $7500.00. Hill seconded. The motion passed unanimously. MINI-GRANTS Susan Edwards: The Wild Wind/Remembering Allen Ginsberg is an 80 page book with illustrations that looks at the general approach Ginsberg took to teaching poetics at Naropa University. Edwards, represented by Toni Rosato, asked for funds to publish 500 copies of the book. Rudy made a motion to award Edwards $400.00. Bruck seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Gabrielle Silva: Silva submitted a proposal to produce a thirty minute video documenting KGNU in its transitional period and the move to a new facility. The show will air on CATV Channe154. Berlin moved to fund the project. Bruck seconded. Silva unanimously received $400.00. Barbara Markwood: Markwood asked for funds to publish a book of poetry. WovenWord Press will edit and publish the book. Markwood has poetry readings scheduled to promote the publication. Rudy made a motion to fund the request. Markwood unanimously received $400.00. Michael Brody: Seven high school students will join Brody in writint and reading to the public a screenplay dramatizing their thoughts, images and lives. The readings will take place at the Boulder Public Library. Hill moved to award Brody $400.00. Bruck seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Camilla Beck: Imagine Aeine is a video with interviews of local elder artists, performers and writers to discuss growing old with the arts, and to record their work for exhibition and preservation. The video will air on CATV Channe154. Hill made a motion to award Beck $400.00. Rudy seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. James Downing: Darwin's Prayer is a drama based on the writings of Charles Darwin. The play will be rehearsed for two weeks by Colorado Shakespeare actors in July and then performed as a workshop production. Berlin moved to fund the project with Rudy seconding. Downing unanimously received $400.00. Many Mountains Moving: Susan Becker requested funds to produce issue #13 of Manv Mountains Moving The project is a literary journal of diverse contemporary voices. The work of four Boulder writers will appear in this issue. Rudy made a motion to approve the grant. Bruck seconded. The periodical was approved unanimously. Tree Bernstein: Small Press Ephemera is an exhibit consisting of literary works by 24 poets, seven small presses and over forty individual publications. A poetry reading at the Boulder Public Library will showcase A Poet's Alphabet as well as new work by six featured writers. Berlin moved to fund the project, with Hill seconding. Bernstein received $400.00. Robin Madel: Nieht Mother is a play that deals with suicide presented in a way that raises awareness about suicide and prevention. The performance will take place at the Guild Theater East and will be performed in November. Hill made a motion to approve the project with Berlin seconding. Madel was awarded $400.00. Betsy Gill: Artful Quartet is a visual arts exhibition exploring and celebrating Boulder artists working in collaboration. The four artists are Gill, Robert Spellman, Joan Anderson and Kristine Kowalski. The exhibit will be at the Dairy Center for the Arts in September. Hill moved to fund the project with Rudy seconding the motion. Gill received $400.00. Guenter Engling: The grant for Boulder Revels was tabled until the organization submits a letter of intent from a venue. Boulder Dushanbe Sister Cities: Jancy Campbell requested funds to make a display case for the fine art and textiles made by Tajik artisans. The case will accommodate beautiful examples of textiles, embroidery work, ceramics, some literary pieces, sculpture and visual art pieces. The completed display case will be located at the Tea House. Rudy made a motion to award the Dushanbe Sister City $400.00. Berlin seconded with the motion passing unanimously. Jessica Moon Bernstein: The application was not discussed because Bernstein does not meet residency requirements. Adam Kay: Kay is proposing The Cuttlefish. a literary journal featuring local writers. Kay did not have written assurance for additional financial support. The Commission suggested Kay resubmit a grant when additional funding is secured. Reed Bye: Jack Collom: A Celebratory Evening is planned to commemorate the local poet's 70th birthday. The event will take place November 16 with a reception after Jack Collom's readings and a Proclamation from the City of Boulder honoring Jack. Rudy moved to award Bye $400.00 with Berlin seconding. The approval was unanimous. Lois LaFond: LaFond will host a CD release event for I AM WHO I AM, which was originally released sixteen years ago. Bi-lingual elementary school children will participate in the event at the Fox Theater. Rudy made a motion to fund the project. Hill seconded. LaFond received $400.00. Colorado Shakespeare Festival: CSF requested funds to provide at risk populations with tickets to the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. This constituency usually has not been able to enjoy Shakespeare because of the price. Hill moved to award CSF $400.00. Rudy seconded with the motion passing unanimously. Earthnet Proposal: Expanding the Boulder Arts Resource website. Added components to the existing website include: • For upcoming arts events, search by date range, event title, category (theater, dance, music) and venue. Results are shown in a page record set that will contain all pertinent information. • What's showing this week • Top five user rated events will be listed on the home page • Five national headline titles listed, linked to main content The Commission unanimously approved $15,075.00 for the project pending further discussion.
