Minutes - Arts Commission - 4/19/2006Boulder Arts Commission April 19, 2006 Boulder Pnblic Library Members Present: Rona Cantor John Decker Elzbieta Nolan Michael Smith Ginger Zukowski The meeting was called to order at 5:40 p.m. Also Present: Liz Abbott Donna Gartenmann Tina Walker Kazen Brown Christy Hazris Jason Fellin Caryl Kassoy Marda Kim Kent Nowlin Kate Lesta Norrie Julie Schumaker Gemma Wilcox Minutes of the March 15, 2006 meeting were approved as received. Elzbieta Nolan took her oath of office. Election of Officers: Ginger Zukowski wiIl serve as Chair for the Arts Commission. John Decker is the new Vice Chair. Theater Forum Undate: The forum is scheduled for June 21. Molly Tayer will facilitate the event. Notices will be listed in the Boulder Arts Resource Newsletter and the Boulder County Arts Alliance newsletter. Apnroval of Final Reports: The Boulder Intemational Film Festival submitted final reports for the 2005 Arts in Education grant and the 2006 Major grant. The reports were unanimously approved. Mackv Auditorium: The Colorado Mahlerfest asked for two dates for rent &ee space at Macky. The request was unanimously approved. Banner Ordinance Change: Gartenmann gave an update on the banner ordinance change. If the changes aze approved by City Council, arts groups, non-profits, sporting events, University functions will be able to announce their events on festive banners installed on light poles along major thoroughfares. The banners will be installed on main arteries such as Canyon, 28`h street, Broadway, 13`" street and Baseline. Addirional locarions will be evaluated in the future. Organizations will be required to pay for ffie banners, installation and removal when the event is finished. The Commission members are very much in favor of the change and feel it is a great opportunity to show off Boulder. The BAC discussed setting aside funds for a matching grant to assist arts organizations to purchase banners and to help with the initial banner brackets. Gartenmann will review budget figures and return with the information at the May meeting. MINI-GRANT HEARING Boulder Community Broadcast Association: No representation from the organization. The request was tabled. YMCA Breakthrough Arts: Breakthrough Arts requested funds for free after-school arts programs for high school teens. Classes include Break Dancing, Hip Hop, visual arts, creative writing, photography and more. The requested failed for lack of a motion. Hora Romaneasca: No representation from the organization. The request was tabled. Friends of the Colorado Music Festival: Caryl Kassoy submitted a grant for the 20`n year of the Young People's Concert at Chautauqua auditorium. The Circus Train and The Little Engine That Could will be the focal point. Decker made a motion to support the project with Cantor seconding. The Friends of the Colorado Music Festival received $600.00. Unspoken Word: Kent Nowlin asked for funds for "Bringing Art Directly to the People". Unspoken Word presents emerging artists and performers in a unique community venue. Venues for the grant request aze Copy Experts and Silicon Mountain Memory. Cantor made a motion to support Unspoken Word for $600.00. Smith seconded the motion which passed unanimously. Jason Fellin: Fellin requested a grant for $600 to present "An Evening of Hindustani Classical Music, Featuring the Sazangi and Tabla". The performance will be held at Old Main on the university campus. Smith made a motion to approve the gant. The motion carried. International Tap Association: Marda Kim asked for $600 for Tap Jammin' II. The program is a collaborative project to present classes and a tap jam with internationally acclaimed tap artists. Smith moved to fiord the project, with Cantor seconding. The motion passed unanimously. Gemma Wilcox: Wilcox presented a proposal to produce the 4`n Act of her multi- chazacter, one woman show to be performed at the Boulder International Fringe Festival. Decked moved to award Wilcox $600.00. The motion carried. Kate Lesta: Lesta represents Communikey, a local organization with a focus on presenting electronic arts, showcasing international and local talents. The performance ~ will feature three musicians from Berlin. Smith made a motion to award Lesta $600.00. The motion passed unanimously. Boulder History Museum: Julie Schumaker requested $600.00 for Celebrate the COWGIRL, a photographic exhibit. Tn addition, the Museum will present interpretation programs of Calamity Jane and Annie Oakley. Liz Masterson will also perform. Cantor moved to award the Museum $600.00. Decker_ seconded the motion.
