Minutes - Arts Commission - 2/15/2006DRAFT Boulder Arts Commission February 15,2006 Boulder Public Library Members Present: Also Present: Patti Bruck Liz Abbott Rona Cantor ponna Gartenmann John Decker Tina Walker Michael Smith Mollie Fager Mary Wohl Haan Joan Mazkowitz Andrew McArthur Alison Moore Vern Seieroe The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. Updates Dairv Lease: Gartenmann reported on the Dairy Center for the Art's request to revisit the 20 year lease with the city. The Dairy is interested in purchasing the building back from the city. An initial meeting with the City Manager, City Attorney and Dairy representatives was held. The City Manager asked for a business plan and needs assessment from the Dairy. 2006 Theater Funds: The Arts budget includes a$15,000 line item for theater. After the Guild Theater closed its doors, the BAC used the funding for space rental grants for city theater groups. Subsequently, Commissioners felt the funds could be used in a way that would be more beneficial to the organizations. No decision on how to use the funds was made in 2005. The theater money was rolled over to the 2006 budget. Gartenmann will research theater grants from other organizations. The Commission will review the information at the Mazch meeting and discuss the direction most beneficial to the theater community. Washington Elementazy School: Decker brought Commission members up to date on the process for the use of Washington Elementazy School. Three finalists, including Open Studios, have been selected to submit a detailed Request for Proposal. The RFP's are due in July 2006. One on One Technical Assistance Grant Report Alison Moore, Executive Director of the Boulder County Arts Alliance received a technical assistance grant for the implementation of computer software and to create an Access database template that can be used by any city of Boulder arts organizations. BCAA mentoted Lemon Sponge Cake Contemporary Ballet and the Society for Creative Aging, giving them the use and instruction database for registering students and tracking performance participation. Quarterly Financial Reports Dance Bride: Mary Wohl Haan is working on April's Dance Month. Haan is working with the Daily Camera to insert a detailed listing of all dance performances in the paper to reach a wider audience. Haan has been working with the Colorado Dance Alliance and collaborating with a number of Denver dance organizations. Dairy Center for the Arts: Mollie Fager, Executive Director, reported that the Dairy is two years out from retiring the organization's debt. The Dairy is trying to resolve the space issues related to CATV's disbanding. The Dairy Boazd is beginning a strategic planning process. The City has offered an introduction on the process used by all city departments. Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art: V em Seieroe, Joan Markowitz and Andrew McArthur represented the Museum. Programming has increased with Theater 13 becoming the resident theater organization. A group of young community members has been working with the Museum on programming. The Board is preparing an Ethics Policy which will be sent to Gartenmann upon its completion. The 2006 budget is optimistic and on track with the future goals. Elizabeth Margolin, formerly the visual arts critic at the Daily Camera has joined the staff to do publicity for the Museum. ourned at 7:30 p.m. 3/~-r/off Signed V Date
