Minutes of the June 25, 2003 meeting were approved as received Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art: Ken Bloom, Directar of BMoCA and Board President, Jane McMahon gave an update of the financial situation of the Museum. A declme m corporate and foundation support, elimmation of the Colorado Council grants, lower donatrons and shortfalls m fundraising efforts have left a financial gap. Summer is tradiLionally a very slow time for arts orgaruzations Bloom is projectmg a shortage of $30,000 m the short term but anticipates an increase m revenue wrth the Fall lmeup of programs. The budget has been reduced m areas of programmmg, advertismg and staff Any additional staff cuts would not allow the Museum to operate effectively. The bottom hne request from BMoCA is $5000.00 from the Commission. Smith made a motion to loan the Museum $5,000 with the understanding that the orgamzation will pay back the funds by the end of 2003. In the event the loan is not repaid by 12/31/03, the amount will be reduced monthly from the annual support from the City. Moss seconded the mohon The vote was unammous m favor of BMoCA. The Arts Paper: After discussion, the Commission unammously agreed to look at a new approach for the Arts Paper m 2004 All agreed to fimsh the October/November issue of the paper and re-evaluate the directron in the commg year Garienmann and Zukowski will continue to wark on the project and report back to the Commission BAC Interview Questions: Questions used m the mterview process for Arts Commission candidates were reviewed. Several of the questions were outdated. Gartenmann suggested usmg three questions the Cultural Master Plan Steermg Committee drafted for the update of the Plan~ 1 What are the most pressing issues facmg the arts m Boulder? 2. What are the commumty's greatest strengths/assets to build on for the future? 3. What is the ma~or leap Boulder needs to take to raise cultural awareness/activrtes to the next level? Members unanimously approved the questions. The fourth question approved is: What strengths would you bring to the Commtssron? Peak Arts Request: Peak Arts requested two nights of rent free space at Macky Auditorium. The dates requested are September 12 and 13. Smith moved to award two nights of space to Peak Aris with Zukoswkt seconding. The motion passed unanimously. Imagination Makers: The final report for the 2002 Technical Assistance grant for Imagination Makers was unanimously approved. Mini-Grants The following applicants did not attend the meeting and the grants submitted were not reviewed. Boulder Friends of Jazz Sharon Lange Scot Lefavor Max Reinhardt Richard Pawlenty The application submitted by the Boulder County Arts Alliance was withdrawn. Laura Weaver: Weaver's project, Boulder Women Writers• A Night of Word and Vision, is a three hour program featuring well established and emerging women writers. Participants will read their works and participate m panel discussions. The program will beheld at the Boulder Public Library. Moss moved to award Weaver $600.00 with Zukowski seconding. The motion passed unanimously. Frequent Flyers Productions: Lisa Goodrich presented a proposal for Ratcracker, a holiday alternative to the Nutcracker. The performances will be at the Dairy Center for the Arts in December. Smith made a motion to award Frequent Flyers $600.00. Zukowski seconded the motion The vote was unanimous Boulder Municipal Channel 8: Jeane Woods submitted a proposal for Teen Art Cafe. Channel 8 is producing three half-hour programs featuring artistically talented middle and high school students in Boulder to honor and inspire other students to create Zukowski moved to award Channel 8 $600. Smith seconded The motion passed unanimously. Pat Connelly: Connelly is coordinating "Dance is for Everybody", a community dance event at the Boulder Public Library in September Dancers and organizations will perform in 30 minute intervals to promote dance in Boulder. The second day of the program will feature dance studios. Parttctpants will be invited to tom in the dancing Moss made a motion to award Connelly $600.00 with Smith seconding. The request was unanimously approved. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40.
