Minutes - Arts Commission - 06/25/2003Approved 7/16/03 Boulder Arts Commission June 25, 2003 Boulder Public Library Plannmg Meeting Members Present: Patti Bruck Erich Hill Ann Moss Michael Smrth A-so Present: Donna Gartenmann Member Absent: Gmger Zukowski The meetmg was called to order at 5:30 p m Minutes of the May 21, 2003 meetmg were approved as received. Final reports for Gallery Sovereign and Many Mountams Moving were approved as recerved. Dairy Center for the Arts• Karen Gerrity submitted a request to the Commission related to a grant for theater subsidy. Barry Fnedman, a recipient of a BAC theater rent ~ant, cancelled his pro~ect The Dairy had turned down several potential renters because of Friedman's bookmg The Dairy is requeshng Friedman's funds to subsidize Dairy sponsored theater camp programs. CAMP Boulder asked to use the theaters for programs The Dairy has proposed free warkshops in August m collaboration wrth Play for Peace. The Commission's concerns and comments. • The Dairy, as manager of the theaters needs to put safeguards in place m the event a similar situahon occurs. • How will the BAC know if the proposed programs work? Most parents have their kids enrolled m summer programs by now. • The Commission requests a complete breakdown of attendance, marketing, flyers, financials, etc The origmal intent of the funds was for theater rent assistance, not general operating for the Dairy • The Dairy should use this as an opportunity to rev~ew the rental policy Bruck made a motion to approve the request contingent on a final report, includmg a sample of the bookmg contract for rentals, a detailed breakdown of the pro~ect, financials, copies of classes and schedules and matertals. Smith seconded the motion The request was unammously approved. Arts Paper: The Commission would like to look at a new approach for the Arts Paper. Moss suggested a joint pro~ect with the Umversity Students would be encouraged to research and waste about the arts. Gartenmann will set up a meeting with the CU Art Museum, the Lrbrary, Moss and Zukowski to explore possibilities Arts Commission interview questions: Commissioners will review the questions currently used on the commission applications and discuss at the July meeting. Gartenmann will find out how Councrl weighs the questions. Master Plan Discussion: Commissioners reviewed the first draft of the Cultural Master Plan update. Smith will give Gartenmann a copy of the Music Festival's long range plan for review. Comments Include the Arts Commrssion mission statement Review the list of accomplishments Reference the quality of the arts in the community Pnontize the goals; create timeline, who is responsible and cost if possible Have a vision of where the arts will be in five years What will be the cntical path for the arts? The BAC will take the leadership role The BAC needs aself-critique. Define the role of the BAC Educate the community. Community awareness of the arts is key. Promote the economic issues of the arts Clearly define the topics in the Plan Promote collaborations Review the Technical assistance grant. Encourage partnerships. Funds will go further with partnerships and collaborations Host a forum with partners in technical assistance collaborations Encourage larger organizations to act as mentor to smaller satellite organizations There are so many organizations, all doing what they want without communicating with the rest of the community Brainstorm what the BAC wants to do beyond the mission The meeting was adjourned at 8.10
