A RESOLUTION ON THE FLATIRONS / SOUTH
CAMPUS PROPERTY.
WHEREAS, the 308 acres of the Flatirons/South Campus Property, located on the southeast
perimeter of the City of Boulder, fonns a"Gateway to Boulder" along the U. S. Highway 36 comdor;
and
WHEREAS, the possible presence of unstable soils and of protected environmental assets
and species makes additional development of this property problematic; and
WHEREAS, in January, 2000, South Boulder Creek, which flows near the boundary of the
Flatirons Property, was designated a State Natural Area by the Colorado Natural Areas Program
owing Co the presence of exceptional naYural features; and
WHEREAS, development of the Flatirons Property would increase traffic on Table Mesa
Drive and the Table Mesa interchange and aggravate the already increasing congestion along the
U.S. Highway 36 corridor; and
WHEREAS, since 1977 portions of the Flatirons Property have been designated as "Open
Space" on the Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Boulder City Council stands willing to purchase
the Flatirons Property from a willing seller at a fair price, for open space or flood mitigation
purposes, in fee title or by means of conservation easement; or to contemplate whatever agreement
might lead to Yhe maxiinum praeticable preservation of the Flatirons Property as an environmental
asset.
