HomeMy WebLinkAbout848 - EXPRESSING the City Councils strong opposition to Federal legislation that would prohibit theRESOLUTION NO. 848 A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE CITY OF BOULDER, COLORADO'S STRONG OPPOSITION TO ANY FEDERAL LEGISLATION THAT WOULD PROHIBIT THE COLLECTION OF SALES TAX ON INTERNET TRANSACTIONS. WHEREAS, the City of Boulder depends on the revenue generated by the collection of sales tax to provide services to the citizens of Boulder; and WHEREAS, the requirement that sales taxes be collected, on purchases from retailers located within or delivered to addresses in the City of Boulder, has been self-imposed by citizens, via affirmative votes at elections, to support services desired by such citizens; and WHEREAS, in order to continue to provide quality public safety, transportation, open space, library, recreation and other services the citizens of Boulder desire and rely upon, it is necessary for the continued collection of the revenues generated by the sales and use tax; and WHEREAS, the prohibition of the collection of sales tax on Internet transactions would severely hinder the provision of services to the citizens of the City of Boulder; and WHEREAS, the purchasing of goods over the Internet is expected to expand dramatically in the future; and WHEREAS, loca] stores are required by law to collect sales tax on transactions within their businesses and the prohibition of the collection of sales tax on Internet transactions is unfair to the local retailers who do business in the City of Boulder; and WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States of America should not create a privileged class of business by exempting Internet companies from collecting legally due sales tax at the expense of local retailers; and WHEREAS, the collection of sales tax on goods sold over the Internet is not a new tax but the ability for cities and states to collect taxes on goods purchased by the residents of their city or state who are constituents expecting the city and state to provide the services paid for by the dollars generated from the collection of sales taxes. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BOULDER, COLORADO HEREBY EXPRESSES THE CITY OF BOULDER COLORADO'S STRONG OPPOSITION TO ANY FEDERAL LEGISLATION THAT WOULD PROHIBIT THE COLLECTION OF SALES TAX ON INTERNET TRANSACTIONS.
