A RESOLUTION REAFFIRMING GOODWILL AND MUTUAL RESPECT AND
CONDENINING RACISM, BIGOTRY, HARASSMENT AND DISCRIMINATION IN
BOULDER
WHEREAS, the City of Boulder views the diversity of our community as a strength; and
WHEREAS, the City of Boulder has an historic commitment to resolving issues of racism,
bigotry and harassment; and
WHEREAS, the City of Boulder is strongly opposed to acts of racism, bigotry, harassment and
discrimination in Boulder; and
WHEREAS, the City Council values all residents and visitors to Boulder, promotes acceptance
and respect within the community; and
WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes that acts fostered for the purpose of generating hate
for others pose a threat to economic and community development; and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds the recent racially motivated crimes that have occurred in
Boulder repugnant, disturbing, and in no way acceptable and stands committed to
bringing them to an end; and
WHEREAS, the City Council, as the elected leadership of Boulder, realizes its commitment
and responsibility to oppose acts and practices of discrimination and provide
leadership in speech and in policy to combat such acts and practices.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BOULDER:
That while freedoms of speech and association are strongly respected in
Boulder, acts and practices intended to foster hate and discrimination aze hereby
condemned by City Council as contrary to the values this community espouses regarding
its diversity.
That hate crimes against individuals do damage to our entire community. The City of
Boulder stands committed to opposing all acts of discrimination, bigotry and hate. We
will continue to provide leadership by proactively discouraging the development of
discriminatory attitudes and by enforcing all laws that condemn discrimination, ethnic
intimidation, hazassment and violence. To this end, the City of Boulder commits to
developing mechanisms that assure rapid response to these incidents as well as ongoing
effective engagement with community groups.
That the City Council hereby reaffirms Boulder's commitment to human and civil rights
as outlined in the City of Boulder Human Rights Ordinance and its strong opposition to
any acts of racism, bigotry, harassment and discrimination in Boulder.
4. That the City Council herein issues a policy statement condemning individual and
collective acts of racism, bigotry, harassment and discrimination directed toward any
resident or visitor because of age, ancestry, creed, color, gender vaziance, mental or
physical disability, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, and personal
beliefs and values.
5. That the City Council also issues policy statement promoting a City that supports a fair,
free, safe and friendly environment encouraging goodwill and mutual respect for all.
