HomeMy WebLinkAbout974 - SUPPORTING the University of Colorado 7/19/05, AMEND/APPROVED 07/19/2005Resolution No 974 A Resolution in Support of the University of Colorado WHEREAS, the City of Boulder has been the proud home to the flagship campus of the University of Colorado (CU) since 1876; and WHEREAS, CU's Boulder campus (CU-Boulder) was recognized in 2004 by Economist magazine as the 11`h best public university in the world; and WHEREAS, CU and Harvard were the only two schools in the country to have faculty members awarded MacArthur fellowships four years in a row from 2000 to 2003; and WHEREAS, CU professor Carl Wieman, one of CU's three Nobel laureate faculty members, was named U.S. Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation in 2004; and WHEREAS, CU-Boulder brings to the City of Boulder the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, the Conference on World Affairs, the CU Concerts Artists Series, access to libraries, athletic events, noncredit courses, and numerous other social and cultural offerings, all of which significantly contribute to the city's vibrancy; and WHEREAS, CU-Boulder directly employs more than 12,000 people with the demand for goods and services generated by CU-Boulder leading to the creation of more than 22,000 jobs; and WHEREAS, CU, its students, and their visitors spend more than $2 billion in the state with CU-Bolder accounting for nearly three-fourths of these expenditures; and WHEREAS, the presence of CU's research facilities and the highly skilled labor that CU produces, have attracted major federal facilities, satellite institutions, and major private firms to the city; and WHEREAS, despite all of these remarkable successes and contributions to the city, state, and nation, a variety of unfortunate and highly publicized events have recently combined to challenge the reputation, morale and financial condition of CU; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BOULDER, COLORADO, THAT 1. The Boulder City Council fully recognizes and appreciates the extraordinary importance of CU to the city and state. 2. The Boulder City Council stands by CU during this difficult period. 3. The Boulder City Council directs city staff to work with CU staff to support efforts to emphasize awareness of CU's continual national preeminence as an educational institution. 4. The Boulder City Council directs staff to distribute this resolution to the governor, state legislature, and Colorado's U.S. senators and representatives, so that they may add their support to this important institution.
