A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF INCREASING THE
STATE TOBACCO TAX FOR HEALTH RELATED
PURPOSES
WHEREAS, tobacco use is the leadmg cause of preventable death m Colorado,
kilhng 4,200 Coloradoans each year, and annual health care costs m Colorado directly
related to smoking aze more than $1 0 billion, and
WHEREAS, Colorado is cunently fiftieth among the states m the level of
cigarette ta~ces; and
WHEREAS, raismg tobacco tases will deter youth from becommg addicted to
tobacco products because studies have shown that as the pnce of tobacco nses, an
mcreasmg number of youth will stop, or never start, usmg tobacco, and
WHEREAS, revenues razsed with an mcreased taac on tobacco products will
provide fundmg to prevent, detect and treat cancer and heart and lung disease, ailments
that affect many Coloradoans and w~ll help low-mcome ctuldren and adults receive health
care that they could not otherwise afford
NOW, THEREFORE, BE TI' RESOLVED BY THE CTI'Y COUNCIL OF THE
CTTY OF BOULDER, COLORADO, that it supports mcreasmg the talc on tobacco
products m order to provide better health care for low-mcome children and adults, to help
prevent tobacco use related illnesses and diseases and to deter youth from beconung
addicted to tobacco m the first place, and urges legislative and voter support for
mcreasmg the talc on tobacco products m Colorado
