respect and friendship across cultures through
educational and intercultural opportunities. The goal of our cross cultural workshops are to
increase cross cultural understanding and communication, and to help create a more welcoming
community where differences are recognized, valued and celebrated.

NARRATIVE:
1.AGENCY DESCRIPTION
:
Intercambio Uniting Communities (Intercambio) was founded in 2000 in response to an
e the
quality of life for their families. The Boulder County Housing and Human Services Master Plan
pointed to an acute need for affordable and culturally sensitive English classes held at times and
locations convenient to working parents, classes on how to navigate the service systems of our
county and services that promote cultural competency, trust and partnership with the Latino
community. In 2005, Intercambio opened its doors to all immigrants. In 2011, we changed our
name to Intercambio Uniting Communities to better reflect our diverse client population.
2.NEED/OPPORTUNITY:
The City of Boulder has diversified over the years but it remains heavily segregated primarily due
to language and cultural barriers. According to the recent census, 14.3% of Boulder residents
speak a language other than English at home.
Community reported that just 14% of immigrants rated Boulder as being highly open. While
working hard to learn a new language, to understand a different culture, and to navigate
unfamiliar systems, immigrants may be treated by many members of their new community with
ambivalence, suspicion, fear, or even outright hostility. Every day, somewhere in Boulder,
something happens to make an immigrant feel unwelcome.
Since 2001, Intercambio has worked to break down the language barriers by providing English
classes, courses on life skills and citizenship, and intercultural events to over 3,500 immigrants in
the City of Boulder. In contrast to the broader immigrant po
students view Boulder County as a welcoming place, but there is much work to be done.
In 2011, we expanded our focus to include building cultural understanding for ALL community
members. Improving human relations requires openness and dialogue from both immigrants and
receiving communities (communities into which immigrants settle). We initiate important
conversations about human relations and cultural differences that would not otherwise happen.

3.PROJECT GOALS/ACTITIVIES/IMPACT
Our Cross Cultural Program Goals:
Increase cross cultural understanding and communication.
Create a welcoming community where differences are recognized, valued and celebrated.
Activities:
By 6/30/2013, through this project Intercambio will outreach to local agencies, non-
profits, schools, businesses, clubs, city and county offices to provide 15 two-hour cross cultural
training sessions to 400 community members in the City of Boulder. Our workshops promote
cross cultural understanding by creating a dialogue between members of different cultures in
order to increase awareness, skills, and the ability to observe rather than judge differences.
Intercambio 2012 HRC CIF proposal
Outcomes:
Of the 400 participants, 80% or more will report the following:
I gained perspective on my own culture
I gained a better understanding of concrete cultural differences
I learned about how to observe versus interpret cultural behaviors
I feel better equipped to more openly embrace different communication styles
Ǥ
4. PROMOTING A MORE INCLUSIVE, ENGAGED, AND RESPECTFUL COMMUNITY:
Intercambio works with ALL the different populations (immigrant and receiving communities) of
Boulder to address the fear that arises from cultural differences by bringing groups of people together
to deepen their understanding of different cultures, form intercultural relationships, enhance
bicultural understanding and confidence, and build trust. We help build a positive community where
learning and diversity are valued and celebrated, improving the quality of life for everyone.
trainings provide opportunities for people of
different backgrounds to discuss and share practical everyday cultural differences including
communication styles, equality issues, relationships and punctuality in an atmosphere of respect.
The trainings are interactive and participants are provided with opportunities to reflect on and
to become more understanding and respectful of people from other cultures. People get to know
their peers on a deeper level, what has shaped them, their norms, and how they view the world.
puzzling interactions I have
had with [my student] Aurora and other new immigrants. - Elaine Smith, Intercambio Volunteer Teacher
embodies the following:
1.We are all multicultural and have underlying values that impact how we interact.
2.We do not make people feel guilty about privilege, but we will increase awareness about
how privilege affects assumptions and interactions.
3.It takes time and intention to get to know and understand the individuals you work with.
4.The goal is to increase awareness but not to lose a sense of being genuine.
At Intercambio:
We believe our communities are safer and stronger when everyone can
communicate and it begins with language.
We believe that educating parents leads to an educated family.
We believe our communities are more prosperous when all people have the
opportunity to succeed and give back.
5.PROMOTION
The cultural trainings will be promoted via email and mailed invitations to nonprofits, schools,
businesses, clubs and government agencies. We will also promote the workshops on our website,
via electronic newsletters, and through press releases and public service announcements on local
radio in order to ensure that they are open to all community members.
