B&C Info Sheet The City Of Boulder 2012Boards & Commissions The Boards and Commissions: The City of Boulder has twentyboards and commissions, each with specific responsibilities as detailed in the Boulder City Charter and/or the Boulder Revised Code. Each board and commission works with and advises City departmentsandCity Council on related issues. Individuals and groups may present issues to any of the advisory boards or commissions, as each provides opportunities for public comment atmeetings. Becoming a member ofa board or commission is an excellent way to become active in the decision-making process of city government and offers citizens an opportunity to provide expertise in areas of individual interest. All positions are voluntary and vary in their length of terms and time commitments. The City strives to appoint citizens of diverse ethnic, social, cultural and economic backgrounds to boards and commissions. Who is eligible to apply to a Board or Commission? Applicantsmust be 18 years of age, a registered voterandreside within the City of Boulderlimits. There are a few exceptions and several boards have specific requirements. Please consult the web site for descriptions of these boards to see if you are eligible. It is also important to note that an individual’s eligibility for any city board or commission may vary depending on the vacancy available at the time. For example, if the only male member of a board or commission resigns,in order to meet the requirement that both sexesare representedon all city boards, the vacant position would be open to men only. (Please see the Boulder Revised Code for more information.) How do I apply? If you are eligible and wish to apply, you willneed to complete an online applicationand answer the questionnaires for each board or commissionfor which you would like to be considered. The application is available online on the City’s web page at http://www.bouldercolorado.gov. Applications must be submitted to the Boulder City CouncilOffice by 5 PM on February 16. Lateapplications will not be accepted. We recommend that you try to attend a board meeting prior to the March interview. Group interviews will be held in March on the 8, 13, and 15. No make-up interviews will be scheduled. Can I Apply For More Than One Board or Commission? You may apply for up to three boards. We encourage qualified candidates to apply for more than one board or commission; however, you can only be appointed to one. How Do I Know If I Was Appointed to a Board or Commission? Appointments will be made at the March 20, 2012City Council meeting. Once the City Council has voted and adopted the appointments, each applicant will receive a letter notifying her or himof their appointment status. What Happens If I Am Not Appointed? Your application will be kept on file in the City Manager’s Office for one year, and you will be considered for any interim vacancies that arise throughout the year. If a vacancy occurs, you will be contacted and asked if you wish to have your application considered for the new vacancy. Do not be discouraged if you are not selected to serve on a board at this time. Many current board members will tell you that they applied several times before being appointed.
